Decision making in informed animals is often described by optimality models. However, how information about an environment is acquired is rarely investigated. Cost/benefit considerations suggest that species differ in this respect according to their lifestyle. We tested the hypothesis that resident species react to changes in their familiar environment earlier and explore it more intensively than do nomadic species by observing the response to environmental changes (presentation of novel

In addition, species with a high proportion of fruits in their food spectrum explored more than did species with other food preferences. The results are in accordance with different costs and benefits of information gathering for species that differ in their lifestyle and ecological demands.

Background. Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) in patients with left ventricular hypertrabeculation/noncompaction (LVHT) has been reported in four patients, and a TTS plus LVHT plus a neuromuscular disorder (NMD) was only reported once so far. Here, we present the fifth patient with LVHT and TTS and the second patient with LVHT, TTS, and a NMD. Methods and Results. The patient is a 68 yo female hobby choir singer with a history of skin dermatofibroma, skin fibrokeratoma, arterial hypertension,

... mia, hypothyroidism, anemia, hyponatremia, diverticulosis, LVHT detected at age 60 y, five syncopes, a liver cyst, and carotid endarterectomy 2 months prior to admission because of sudden-onset chest pain. Workup revealed ST elevation, troponin elevation, and mild coronary artery sclerosis. Ventriculography and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) showed the apical type of a TTS. ECG normalised within 10 w and TTE within 6 w under beta-blockers and ATII-blockers. The TTS was triggered by being offended of being unable to sing anymore after endarterectomy. Neurological workup suggested the presence of a NMD. Conclusions. This case shows that LVHT occurs in NMD patients and that patients with LVHT and a NMD may develop a TTS. Whether patients with LVHT and a NMD are particularly prone to develop a TTS requires further confirmation. NMD patients with LVHT should avoid stress not to trigger a TTS.

Degradation of backsheets (BS) and encapsulant polymer components of silicon PV modules is recognized as one of the main reasons for losses in PV plant performance and lifetime expectations. Here, we report first insights into the correlation between BS composition of PV-modules and PV power station performance by using a combination of lab- and field-imaging, as well as spectroscopic and electrical characterizations. Using field-suitable near-infrared absorption (NIRA) spectroscopy, the BS

... cture of 518 PV-modules, 2.5 percent of the PV-modules in a 5 MWp PV power station, was identified on-site. The variance of the BS composition was found to be heterogeneous across PV-modules of the same power class from the same manufacturer. Polymaide-based BS cause in 10 out of 100 inverters ground impedance values below 400 kOhm, which is a typical threshold for inverters connecting to the grid. For primer-based BS this low value is reached 20 times. We conclude these numbers best as possible from the available monitoring data of inverters associated with BS-types from NIRA. Challenging is the identification of degraded primer-based BSs, since visually they look healthy and undistinguishable to well performing BSs. The present results demonstrate that a deeper understanding of the relationship between bill-of-materials and performance of PV-modules is necessary to avoid/minimize inverter shut-downs, and that it can be achieved by using combinations of selected field and lab characterization methods with monitoring data.

... to data through a proposal submission and evaluation process. For this review, we have considered 1636 data utilization proposals and analyzed 2850 publications. In general, TerraSAR-X data is used in a wide range of geoscientific research areas comprising anthroposphere, biosphere, cryosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere. Methodological and technical research is a cross-cutting issue that supports all geoscientific fields. Most of the proposals address research questions concerning the geosphere, whereas the majority of the publications focused on research regarding "methods and techniques". All geoscientific fields involve systematic observations for the establishment of time series in support of monitoring activities. High-resolution SAR data are mainly used for the determination and investigation of surface movements, where SAR interferometry in its different variants is the predominant technology. However, feature tracking techniques also benefit from the high spatial resolution. Researchers make use of polarimetric SAR capabilities, although they are not a key feature of the TerraSAR-X system. The StripMap mode with three meter spatial resolution is the preferred SAR imaging mode, accounting for 60 percent of all scientific data acquisitions. The Spotlight modes with the highest spatial resolution of less than one meter are requested by only approximately 30 percent of the newly acquired TerraSAR-X data.

Although microbial communities of anaerobic bioreactors have been extensively studied using DNA-based tools, there are still several knowledge gaps regarding the microbiology of the process, in particular integration of all generated data is still limited. One understudied core phylum within anaerobic bioreactors is the phylum Chloroflexi, despite being one of the most abundant groups in anaerobic reactors. In order to address the abundance, diversity and phylogeny of this group in full-scale

... thanogenic reactors globally distributed, a compilation of 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence data from 62 full-scale methanogenic reactors studied worldwide, fed either with wastewater treatment anaerobic reactors (WTARs) or solid-waste treatment anaerobic reactors (STARs), was performed. One of the barriers to overcome was comparing data generated using different primer sets and different sequencing platforms. The sequence analysis revealed that the average abundance of Chloroflexi in WTARs was higher than in STARs. Four genera belonging to the Anaerolineae class dominated both WTARs and STARs but the core populations were different. According to the phylogenetic analysis, most of the sequences formed clusters with no cultured representatives. The Anaerolineae class was more abundant in reactors with granular biomass than in reactors with disperse biomass supporting the hypothesis that Anaerolineae play an important role in granule formation and structure due to their filamentous morphology. Cross-study comparisons can be fruitfully used to understand the complexity of the anaerobic digestion process. However, more efforts are needed to standardize protocols and report metadata information.

The deletion of the protein phosphatase-1 (PP1) regulator known as Nuclear Inhibitor of PP1 (NIPP1) is embryonic lethal during gastrulation, hinting at a key role of PP1-NIPP1 in lineage specification. Consistent with this notion we show here that a mild, stable overexpression of NIPP1 in HeLa cells caused a massive induction of genes of the mesenchymal lineage, in particular smooth/cardiac-muscle and matrix markers. This reprogramming was associated with the formation of actin-based stress

G-protein signalling is an evolutionary conserved concept highlighting its fundamental impact on developmental and functional processes. Studies on the effects of G protein signals on tissues as well as an entire organism are often conducted in Caenorhabditis elegans. To understand and control dynamics and kinetics of the processes involved, pharmacological modulation of specific G protein pathways would be advantageous, but is difficult due to a lack in accessibility and regulation. To provide

... this option, we designed G protein-coupled receptor-based designer receptors (DREADDs) for C. elegans. Initially described in mammalian systems, these modified muscarinic acetylcholine receptors are activated by the inert drug clozapine-N-oxide, but not by their endogenous agonists. We report a novel C. elegans-specific DREADD, functionally expressed and specifically activating G q -protein signalling in vitro and in vivo which we used for modulating mating behaviour. Therefore, this novel designer receptor demonstrates the possibility to pharmacologically control physiological functions in C. elegans. Designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs) have been developed as a tool to study and to specifically manipulate G-protein signalling in vivo 1,2 . This technology for the selective control of signalling cascades has been found to be invaluable not only to investigate the impact of specific G-protein signalling on distinct physiological processes but also to control cellular functions in a cell-type specific manner. Besides DREADDs as pharmacogenetic tools also optogenetic methods have been generated. Both approaches are non-invasive and based on modified receptors which can be specifically activated -DREADDs exclusively by synthetic ligands and optogenetic tools only by light. The first generation of DREADDs was based on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors which have been altered by two point mutations within transmembrane domains 3 and 5 to inhibit activation by the endogenous agonist acetylcholine (ACh) but allowing stimulation by the inert compound clozapine-N-oxide (CNO) 1 . Further modification allowed for specific activation of G q , G s , or G i signalling pathways, respectively 2 . These DREADDs are called rM3Dq, rM3Ds, and hM4Di by convention 3 . They have been extensively pharmacologically characterized 4 and widely used to specifically activate and inactivate for instance neuron populations in vivo by employing the G q -and the G i -specific DREADDs, respectively 5 . DREADDs have also been involved to study neuronal impact on fear memory, Parkinson disease, Down syndrome, and the role of glial cells in vivo 6-9 . In the periphery, the DREADD technology has been applied to study metabolic functions in islet β -cells and hepatocytes 2,10 . Despite the power and simplicity in the use of DREADDs many physiological processes and functions associated with specific signalling cascades are not easy to delineate in mammals due to the complexity of the organisms. The application in less complex systems would be highly advantageous to overcome these limitations. Recently, the DREADD technology was transferred to Drosophila melangoster showing that mammalian DREADDs can be efficiently expressed in the fruitfly and modulate physiological functions linked to G-protein pathways 11 . The use of mammalian DREADDs in other organisms also raises the interesting question whether organism-specific DREADDs can be generated likewise. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a very simple model organism frequently employed for the investigation of various biological questions, is highly suitable for the dissection of the impact of signalling cascades. So far only optogenetics have been successfully utilised as a
