The formation of highly active and stable acetylene hydrochlorination catalysts is of great industrial importance. The successful replacement of the highly toxic mercuric chloride catalyst with gold has led to a flurry of research in this area. One key aspect, which led to the commercialization of the gold catalyst is the use of thiosulphate as a stabilizing ligand. This study investigates the use of a range of sulfur containing compounds as promoters for production of highly active Au/C
more » ... ts. Promotion is observed across a range of metal sulfates, non-metal sulfates, and sulfuric acid treatments. This observed enhancement can be optimized by careful consideration of either pre- or post-treatments, concentration of dopants used, and modification of washing steps. Pre-treatment of the carbon support with sulfuric acid (0.76 m) resulted in the most active Au/C in this series with an acetylene conversion of ≈70% at 200 °C.

Chern-Simons classes and the Ricci flow on 3-manifolds [article]

Simons published a paper where they defined a new type of characteristic class - one that depends not just on the topology of a manifold but also on the geometry.  ...  In particular, it is shown that the Chern- Simons class corresponding to the first Pontryagin class is invariant under the Ricci flow on the warped products S^2×_f S^1 and S^1 ×_f S^2 but that this class  ...  therefore the Chern-Simons class {T P 1 (ω)} ∈ H 3 (E(M ), R) varies.  ...

Conscious observers clarify many worlds [article]

Christoph Simon
2009 arXiv   pre-print
In this brief note I argue that putting conscious observers at the center of the considerations clarifies and strengthens the many-worlds interpretation. The basic assumption, which seems extremely plausible based on our current understanding of the brain and of decoherence, is that quantum states corresponding to distinct conscious experiences have to be orthogonal. I show that, once this is accepted, probabilistic measurement outcomes corresponding to basis elements and following Born's rule emerge naturally from global unitary dynamics.

Electrocorticogram (ECoG) well characterizes hand movement intentions and gestures. In the present work we aim to investigate the possibility to enhance hand pose classification, in a Rock-Paper-Scissor - and Rest - task, by introducing topological descriptors of time series data. We hypothesized that an innovative approach based on topological data analysis can extract hidden information that are not detectable with standard Brain Computer Interface (BCI)techniques. To investigate this
more » ... is, we integrate topological features together with power band features and feed them to several standard classifiers, e.g. Random Forest,Gradient Boosting. Model selection is thus completed after a meticulous phase of bayesian hyperparameter optimization. With our method, we observed robust results in terms of ac-curacy for a four-labels classification problem, with limited available data. Through feature importance investigation, we conclude that topological descriptors are able to extract useful discriminative information and provide novel insights.Since our data are restricted to single-patient recordings, generalization might be limited. Nevertheless, our method can be extended and applied to a wide range of neurophysiological recordings and it might be an intriguing point of departure for future studies.
