The Klangdom is an audio spatialization instrument developed at the Institut für Musik und Akustik at the ZKM. It is made up of 39 Meyer Sound loudspeakers hung on four sliding tracks, allowing for easy re-configuration of the speaker setup. The audience sits inside the Klangdom, which can be controlled either directly via a mixer, by externally developed software, or by a sequencer for sound movement, Zirkonium, developed at the ZKM. Zirkonium can accept and spatialize audio generated by other

The Architecture Of Auracle: A Real-Time, Distributed, Collaborative Instrument

Auracle is a "group instrument," controlled by the voice, for real-time, interactive, distributed music making over the Internet. It is implemented in the Java TM programming language using a combination of publicly available libraries (JSyn and TransJam) and custom-built components. This paper describes how the various pieces -the voice analysis, network communication, and sound synthesis -are individually built and how they are combined to form Auracle.

New experimental methods must be developed to study interaction networks in systems biology. To reduce biological noise, individual subjects, such as single cells, should be analyzed using high throughput approaches. The measurement of several correlative physical properties would further improve data consistency. Accordingly, a considerable quantity of data must be acquired, correlated, catalogued and stored in a database for subsequent analysis. Results: We have developed openBEB (open

... cal Experiment Browser), a software framework for data acquisition, coordination, annotation and synchronization with database solutions such as openBIS. OpenBEB consists of two main parts: A core program and a plug-in manager. Whereas the data-type independent core of openBEB maintains a local container of raw-data and metadata and provides annotation and data management tools, all data-specific tasks are performed by plug-ins. The open architecture of openBEB enables the fast integration of plug-ins, e.g., for data acquisition or visualization. A macro-interpreter allows the automation and coordination of the different modules. An update and deployment mechanism keeps the core program, the plug-ins and the metadata definition files in sync with a central repository. Conclusions: The versatility, the simple deployment and update mechanism, and the scalability in terms of module integration offered by openBEB make this software interesting for a large scientific community. OpenBEB targets three types of researcher, ideally working closely together: (i) Engineers and scientists developing new methods and instruments, e.g., for systems-biology, (ii) scientists performing biological experiments, (iii) theoreticians and mathematicians analyzing data. The design of openBEB enables the rapid development of plug-ins, which will inherently benefit from the "house keeping" abilities of the core program. We report the use of openBEB to combine live cell microscopy, microfluidic control and visual proteomics. In this example, measurements from diverse complementary techniques are combined and correlated.

The adsorption response of eosin Y and indigo carmine acid dyes on activated carbon as a function of system temperature for a fixed concentration was investigated at various temperatures via adsorption isotherms and their thermodynamic quantities such as enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy changes. The adsorption data were exploited to develop a new adsorption isotherm. The new isotherm was developed with the spirit of solid–liquid phase equilibrium and regular solution theory. The

... model has four adjustable constants and correlates adsorption isotherm in terms of the system temperature and melting temperature of the dye. The effect of pH on the removal of acid dyes was reported. The pH variation was observed to affect the adsorption efficiency. The removal of eosin Y and indigo carmine decreased from 99.4% to 82.6% and 92.38% to 79.48%, respectively, when the pH of the solution varied from 2 to 12. The thermodynamic analysis of the process reveals that the process of the removal of acid dyes is exothermic and spontaneous. Moreover, the kinetics parameters of the batch process are reported.

History-dependent metastable states with different bulk properties are formed in the vortex state of the type-II superconductor 2H-NbSe 2 . Magnetic measurements demonstrate the difference between the shielding responses of a field-and a zero-field-cooled state, and provide a procedure for switching the system from one state to the other.

openBIS: a flexible framework for managing and analyzing complex data in biology research

Modern data generation techniques used in distributed systems biology research projects often create datasets of enormous size and diversity. We argue that in order to overcome the challenge of managing those large quantitative datasets and maximise the biological information extracted from them, a sound information system is required. Ease of integration with data analysis pipelines and other computational tools is a key requirement for it. Results: We have developed openBIS, an open source

... tware framework for constructing user-friendly, scalable and powerful information systems for data and metadata acquired in biological experiments. openBIS enables users to collect, integrate, share, publish data and to connect to data processing pipelines. This framework can be extended and has been customized for different data types acquired by a range of technologies. Conclusions: openBIS is currently being used by several SystemsX.ch and EU projects applying mass spectrometric measurements of metabolites and proteins, High Content Screening, or Next Generation Sequencing technologies. The attributes that make it interesting to a large research community involved in systems biology projects include versatility, simplicity in deployment, scalability to very large data, flexibility to handle any biological data type and extensibility to the needs of any research domain.

We have received feedback from our users and supporters on the functionality and usability of the Swiss Grid Proteomics Portal during its first year of operation. We have also realized which aspects of the portal could be improved upon through frequent monitoring and interaction with the production system under heavy use. In a second, highly upgraded version of the Swiss Proteomics Portal, called iPortal, we have introduced several new concepts based on this feedback and both user and supporter

Disorder, metastability, and history dependence in transformations of a vortex lattice

Magnetic screening response of the superconductor 2H-NbSe 2 with varying pinning reveals a rich evolution of the peak effect from a history-independent sharp anomaly to a broad and strongly history dependent effect with internal structure. The results display a stepwise disordering of the vortex lattice through transformations affected by both thermal fluctuations and quenched disorder.
