The recent success of the generative model shows that leveraging the multi-modal embedding space can manipulate an image using text information. However, manipulating an image with other sources rather than text, such as sound, is not easy due to the dynamic characteristics of the sources. Especially, sound can convey vivid emotions and dynamic expressions of the real world. Here, we propose a framework that directly encodes sound into the multi-modal (image-text) embedding space and
more » ... an image from the space. Our audio encoder is trained to produce a latent representation from an audio input, which is forced to be aligned with image and text representations in the multi-modal embedding space. We use a direct latent optimization method based on aligned embeddings for sound-guided image manipulation. We also show that our method can mix text and audio modalities, which enrich the variety of the image modification. We verify the effectiveness of our sound-guided image manipulation quantitatively and qualitatively. We also show that our method can mix different modalities, i.e., text and audio, which enrich the variety of the image modification. The experiments on zero-shot audio classification and semantic-level image classification show that our proposed model outperforms other text and sound-guided state-of-the-art methods.

Identification using biometrics is an important yet challenging task. Abundant research has been conducted on identifying personal identity or gender using given signals. Various types of biometrics such as electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), face, fingerprint, and voice have been used for these tasks. Most research has only focused on single modality or a single task, while the combination of input modality or tasks is yet to be investigated. In this paper, we propose deep

By engaging multi-modality, a single model can handle various input domains without training each modality independently, and the correlation between domains can increase its generalization performance on the tasks.

2017 Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine
Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is a demyelinating disorder characterized by the loss of myelin in the center of the basis pons, and is mainly caused by the rapid correction of hyponatremia. We report the case of a young woman who presented with gait disturbance and alcohol withdrawal, and who was eventually diagnosed with CPM. Generally, the cause and pathogenesis of CPM in chronic alcoholics remain unclear. In this cases, the CPM may be unrelated to hyponatremia or its correction. However,
more » ... it is possible that the osmotic pressure changes due to refeeding syndrome after alcohol withdrawal was the likely cause in this case. This case illustrates the need for avoiding hasty, and possibly incomplete diagnoses, and performing more intensive test procedures to ensure a correct diagnosis.

2004 Korean Circulation Journal
Candida prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is a rare entity. However, its incidence is expected to increase along with increasing incidence of nosocomial candida infection. A valve replacement combined with antifungal chemotherapy has been the standard treatment. However, successful treatment with the long-term administration of oral fluconazole has been reported. Herein, a case of bioprosthetic valve endocarditis due to candida parapsilosis, which recurred after a re-do operation, and treated

2015 Gastric Cancer
The aim of this study was to investigate learning curves for surgeons performing D2 lymph node dissection based on actual patient survival. Methods A total of 3,284 patients with gastric cancer who underwent curative intent gastric cancer surgery by nine surgeons in eight Korean hospitals between 2001 and 2006 were included. Each surgeon's experience was coded as the number of D1 ? b or more gastrectomies performed before that for each patient, which indicates the surgeon's total number of
more » ... surgical experiences. Surgeon experience was grouped into two sets of categories. The set of categories included four groups of experience: B50, 51-100, 101-200, and [200 applicable operations. Multivariate survival time regression models were used to evaluate the association between surgeon experience and overall survival. Results The learning curve for gastric cancer survival after open gastric cancer surgery was steep and did not reach a plateau until a surgeon completed 100 operations. Overall survival rate was the lowest among patients treated by a surgeon with an experience of 50-100 cases. The overall survival of patients at 5 years when the surgeon had a history of more than 100 experiences was higher in each stage than that when the surgeon had a history of fewer than 100 experiences. Conclusion As a surgeon's experience increases, survival after gastric cancer surgery improves. Special attention needs to be paid to the second period of surgeon experience because survival of patients in this period was the lowest.

A thymoma commonly occurs in the superior mediastinum or the upper part of the anterior mediastinum but can be located in other places in rare cases. Cystic degeneration in a thymoma is a relatively common but focal event. In rare cases, the process proceeds to the extent that most if not all of the lesion becomes cystic. We report a case of a patient with a paracardial cystic thymoma in the lower aspect of the anterior mediastinum. A 49-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of a

Contrast-enhanced chest CT scan revealed a 5x5cm sized, well-marginated, right paracardial cystic mass with a curvilinear and oval enhancing solid portion. A Surgical resection was performed. The mass was discontinuous with normal thymic tissue. Microscopy revealed a type B1 thymoma with prominent foci of medullary differentiation according to the WHO classification. There was no capsular or local invasion. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged in good health. (Tuberc Respir Dis 2007; 62: 331-335)

more » ... opic polypectomy, there is a growing concern about iatrogenic complications, such as bleeding and perforation. The aim of this study is to analyze the clinical presentation and management of complications during colonoscopic polypectomy. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of colonoscopic examinations performed at 5 hospitals of Hallym University Medical Center between June 2005 and June 2008. Results: A total of 26,773 colonoscopies and 4,123 colonoscopic polypectomy were performed. The overall rate of complication was 1.04% (43/4,123). Perforation occurred in 0.19% (8/4,123) of cases, and bleeding occurred in 0.85% (35/4,123) of cases. Perforation occurred in 0.05% of snare polypectomies, 1.09% of endoscopic mucosal resections (EMR), and 7.14% of endoscopic submucosal dissections (ESD). Bleeding occurred in 0.8% of snare polypectomies, 1.09% of EMRs, and 3.57% of ESDs. The complication rate of ESDs was higher than in EMRs and snare polypectomies (P<0.001). Endoscopic clippings were performed in 25% of perforation and 66.7% of bleeding cases. Medical treatment was successful in 75% of perforation and 100% of bleeding cases. Conclusions: Colonoscopic polypectomy is a safe procedure for the treatment of colonic polyps, but rarely, serious complications occur. Compared to a snare polypectomy or an EMR, the complication of an ESD occurs more frequently. Endoscopic treatment and further conservative management seems to be appropriate in most cases with complication. (Intest Res 2011;13:46-51)

Experimental demonstration of decoherence suppression via quantum measurement reversal [article]

2011 arXiv   pre-print
Taming decoherence is essential in realizing quantum computation and quantum communication. Here we experimentally demonstrate that decoherence due to amplitude damping can be suppressed by exploiting quantum measurement reversal in which a weak measurement and the reversing measurement are introduced before and after the decoherence channel, respectively. We have also investigated the trade-off relation between the degree of decoherence suppression and the channel transmittance.

Uncommon Cause of Trigeminal Neuralgia: Tentorial Ossification over Trigeminal Notch

2015 Case Reports in Anesthesiology
Ossification of the tentorium cerebelli over the trigeminal notch is rare, but it may cause compression of the trigeminal nerve, leading to trigeminal neuralgia (TN). We were unable to find any previously reported cases with radiological evaluation, although we did find one case with surgically proven ossification of the tentorium cerebelli. Here, we present a case of TN caused by tentorial ossification over the trigeminal notch depicted on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT).
