While evidence shows that there are only few reliable differences between boys' and girls' brains relevant to learning or education , society takes these small differences and makes them much bigger, supporting boys' ability in math and science, and discouraging girls who study these subjects. In view of this situation, the EU Parliament encourages all State Members to invest consistently in information, awareness-raising and educational campaigns addressing stereotyped perceptions of gender

UNESCO, in its turn, highlight the urgent need to combat those stereotypes by training teachers to encourage girls to pursue STEM careers and developing curricula that are gender-sensitive. With this context in mind, FOSTWOM intend to use the inclusive potential of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to propose STEM subjects free of stereotyping assumptions on gender abilities. This document makes a benchmark on gender balance in STEM education and a diagnosis on STEM barriers implemented with secondary schools and higher education institutions, as a first step in the FOSTWOM project.

2020 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
New teaching approaches are emerging in higher education, such as flipped classrooms. In addition, academic institutions are offering new types of training like Massive Online Open Courses. Both of these new ways of education require high-quality learning objects for their success, with learning videos being the most common to provide theoretical concepts. Video is Key for Flipped Learning: An Experience at Universitat Politecnica de Valencia

2016 International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge
Universitat Politècnica de Valencia is devoting a large scale effort in applying Flipped Learning to University's courses. For that there is a program that both encourages and support teachers in this educational technique. The program has been carried out as a pilot in two semesters of the academic term 2014-2015 and as a production service in the ongoing academic term 2015-2016. So, by participating in this program teachers can choose between different kinds of Flipped Learning

Result shows that students like video as their primary tool in Flipped teaching, and also that video-supported courses get better overall results in the appreciation and engagement from the students.

Using a Hybrid Recommending System for Learning Videos in Flipped Classrooms and MOOCs

Jaume Jordán, Soledad Valero, Carlos Turró, Vicent Botti
2021 Electronics
New challenges in education require new ways of education. Higher education has adapted to these new challenges by means of offering new types of training like massive online open courses and by updating their teaching methodology using novel approaches as flipped classrooms. These types of training have enabled universities to better adapt to the challenges posed by the pandemic. In addition, high quality learning objects are necessary for these new forms of education to be successful, with

This paper describes a new approach of a previously presented hybrid learning recommender system based on content-based techniques, which was capable of recommend useful videos to learners and lecturers from a learning video repository. In this new approach, the content-based techniques are also combined with a collaborative filtering module, which increases the probability of recommending relevant videos. This hybrid technique has been successfully applied to a real scenario in the central video repository of the Universitat Politècnica de València.

2020 Zenodo
A MOOC is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web and nowadays it often includes validated academic content designed and produced by faculty members and MOOC teams located at Universities. Within the FOSTWOM consortium, almost all HEI partners are MOOC producers with online courses designed in a multidisciplinary collaboration between teaching staff and the development team. Tutors, instructional designers, graphic designers and video editors, ideate and
more » ... ign the STEM content according to the pedagogical-scientific model of each online course (Moura Santos & Fleming, 2020). It is our responsibility as MOOC developers and designers to promote gender equality and provide better opportunities for MOOC participants to access high quality content in a gender-balanced environment. In addition, the virtual classroom offered by MOOCs may provide a more comfortable learning space for many female students (Lee et al., 2017). The free and easy access to the online courses provided by universities may be providing opportunities for female participants to take STEM courses, especially females from less gender-egalitarian and less economically developed countries. Therefore, we have developed a toolkit to support MOOC stakeholders (content experts, MOOCs' team development members, participants/students) not only in analysing existing STEM MOOCs so that they can raise their awareness on biases, but also in helping them to contribute to future STEM MOOCs free of gender stereotypes. More specifically, the FOSTWOM toolkit provide tools to: ● Make women working in the STEM subjects, researchers and other role models more visible; ● Make women involved in STEM MOOCs, female teachers, professors and lecturers more visible; ● Avoid gender stereotypes in STEM content and activities; ● Use inclusive graphic design: images, colors, avatars and videos, that break gender norms and do not aimed solely at male participants; ● Use real-life applications of relevant content for STEM careers, which in [...]

Efficient Generation of High-Quality Multilingual Subtitles for Video Lecture Repositories [chapter]

Juan Daniel Valor Miró, Joan Albert Silvestre-Cerdà, Jorge Civera, Carlos Turró, Alfons Juan
2015 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
Video lectures are a valuable educational tool in higher education to support or replace face-to-face lectures in active learning strategies. In 2007 the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) implemented its video lecture capture system, resulting in a high quality educational video repository, called poliMedia, with more than 10.000 mini lectures created by 1.373 lecturers. Also, in the framework of the European project transLectures, UPV has automatically generated transcriptions and
more » ... lations in Spanish, Catalan and English for all videos included in the poliMedia video repository. transLectures's objective responds to the widely-recognised need for subtitles to be provided with video lectures, as an essential service for non-native speakers and hearing impaired persons, and to allow advanced repository functionalities. Although high-quality automatic transcriptions and translations were generated in transLectures, they were not error-free. For this reason, lecturers need to manually review video subtitles to guarantee the absence of errors. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of the manual review process from automatic subtitles in comparison with the conventional generation of video subtitles from scratch. The reported results clearly indicate the convenience of providing automatic subtitles as a first step in the generation of video subtitles and the significant savings in time of up to almost 75% involved in reviewing subtitles.

IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n Indoor Coverage and Performance Comparison

2010 2010 6th International Conference on Wireless and Mobile Communications
Because of the appearance of a great variety of IEEE 802.11 variants, there is a wide range of possibilities. Despite of they use to be chosen based on the bandwidth that they are able to provide and the distance area that they are able to cover, sometimes, there are special cases that the best technology is not the newest one. E.g. when we have devices that are going to transmit a maximum of 1 Mbps, but it is needed the highest signal strength, all of them could be the best choice. In this

This comparison will be taken in terms of signal strength inside the coverage area and measuring the interferences between neighboring channels. This study will help the researchers to choose the best technology depending of their deploying case.

A User-Balanced System for IP Telephony in WLANs

Miguel Garcia, Diana Bri, Carlos Turró, Jaime Lloret
2008 2008 The Second International Conference on Mobile Ubiquitous Computing, Systems, Services and Technologies
Wireless IP telephony is becoming very popular between the users of large Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) . This increment has been mainly caused because it allows cost savings. Although, large WLANs use to provide high availability and redundancy, WLANs lack on the available throughput when there are many IP telephony users. In this paper we will present a system that reallocates IP telephony devices when the system detects that an AP is overloaded. The algorithm and the frames used for
