Does China's Belt and Road Initiative Threaten Food Security in Central Asia?

China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) needs little introduction; the infrastructure investment will reconfigure development in Central Asia. As its origin story and initial encounter, Central Asia offers a prismatic lens to delve into the vital impacts and significant changes wrought by the BRI. In the dryland region, the BRI impact on watersheds and agriculture is a critical challenge with direct implications for food security. more &raquo; ... rom the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative and the World Bank to explore the intersection of food production, water and development. Investigation evaluates the possible trade-offs that Chinese infrastructure investment can have on the communities and environment of Central Asia. The findings identify more than 15,000 km of rail and 20,000 km of roads linked to the BRI crisscrossing the region in 2018. Whilst these transport corridors have improved connectivity, many of these rails and roads traverse important agricultural and water zones, creating undetermined risks and opportunities. Land use change was examined within a 10-km buffer around BRI roads and rails from 2008 to 2018. Railways increased by 23% during this time, yet irrigated and rainfed agriculture decreased whilst urban areas markedly expanded. Contextual research identifies how Chinese policies may encourage agribusiness investment for food exports as possible disruptions to national and regional food supply. However, to date Central Asia provides <1% of Chinese agricultural imports. In fact, Afghanistan is the region's dominant export market, tripling agricultural imports >300% in this time. Similarly, five times more livestock are traded within the region than to China. Evaluating infrastructure change is essential to understand BRI impacts on environments and societies, with the food-water nexus a particular concern in Central Asia. Limited Chinese imports of Central Asian agriculture suggests the region's food security will not be significantly altered by the Belt and Road Initiative.

Bacterial Characteristics of Dust Particle Saltation in Gobi Dust Sites, Mongolia

The Gobi Desert is a major source of Asian dust events, and the resulting health hazards have increased significantly in recent years. We reported that a variety of live bacteria were distributed in the Gobi Desert in relation to land use. Bacterial distribution was confirmed in the environment and on the land used by animals; however, bacterial saltation due to dust events has not been investigated in detail. more &raquo; ... dust saltation, live bacteria in four dust-generating areas in the Gobi area were monitored using an artificial dust generating device. The live bacteria were detected by experimental saltation at a wind speed of 6.5–8 m/s in all areas. A certain number of live bacteria are constantly saltated by dust events, and these bacteria depend on land use. Moreover, the bacterial saltation strain depended on land use and diversity, indicating that live bacteria are lifted into the environment by dust events. These findings indicate that dust events saltate environmental bacteria on the ground, suggest the risk of animal-derived bacterial saltation affected by land use, and present cross-border public health challenges to be considered in the future.

National Parks, Protected Areas and Biodiversity Conservation in North Korea: Opportunities for International Collaboration

National parks and protected areas represent one of the best ways to safeguard nature and preserve biodiversity, especially endemic and endangered species. Currently, more than 110 countries have some form of protected areas within their borders. North Korea's comprehensive network of national parks and protected areas are rich in biodiversity and ecological value, however, contemporary research on the integrity of North Korea's protected lands is incomplete. In this paper we utilize a remote
more &raquo; ... nsing approach to explore North Korea's protected area system and investigate the current state of biodiversity conservation. We find that several key biodiversity areas have experienced severe tree loss and habitat fragmentation since 2000 indicating that the effectiveness of national park governance and management toward guarding against biodiversity loss is inadequate. To address the issue of biodiversity conservation, we recommend pathways for international cooperation aimed at enhancing conservation efforts and comment on the steps North Korea can take to achieve the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity's Aichi Targets and Sustainable Development Goals.

Assessing Local Indigenous Knowledge and Information Sources on Biodiversity, Conservation and Protected Area Management at Khuvsgol Lake National Park, Mongolia

Indigenous knowledge about biodiversity and conservation is valuable and can be used to sustainably manage protected areas; however, indigenous communities continue to be marginalized due to the belief that their values and behaviors do not align with the overarching mission of conservation. This paper explores the extent of local knowledge and awareness of biodiversity, conservation and protected area management of indigenous communities at Khuvsgol Lake National Park, Mongolia. We investigate
more &raquo; ... current levels of biodiversity awareness and explore perceptions toward conservation values and park management governance. Most respondents had a high awareness of existing biodiversity and held positive attitudes toward nature conservation and protected areas; however, insufficient knowledge of park rules and low levels of trust between local residents and park authorities may undermine conservation objectives in the long run. We identify an unequal share of economic benefits from tourism and preferential treatment toward elite business owners as a source of conflict. Limited information channels and poor communication between local residents and park authorities are also a source for low-level participation in conservation activities. Leveraging the increasing use of information communication technology, such as mobile phones, can serve as a new mechanism for improved information sharing and transparent reporting between local communities, conservationists and protected area authorities.

Atmospheric dust as a possible survival factor for bioaerosols

In this study, we present some of the laboratory measurements of the viability of bioaerosols together with different environmental dust to understand the interaction among those components. Model airborne bacteria, DH5α Escherichia coli, was used to assess the dust affecting a viability reduction rate of the DH5α bacteria in a Teflon reaction chamber. The viability reduction rate of the DH5α model airborne bacteria was measured with a culture method. The DH5 α bacteria were nebulized into the
more &raquo; ... hamber and airborne dust materials 1) Phosphate Buffer Solution (PBS) as a control, 2) desert sand from Mongolia and 3) sludge dust from the coastal area of Japan. The result indicated that the co-existence of DH5α with desert dust from Mongolia significantly decreased the viability and with the sludge dust from Japan significantly increased the viability of the airborne DH5α compare to the control PBS dust (p<0.05). Furthermore, soot as a model air pollutant was generated by a candle and mixed with a model airborne bacteria Mycobacterium smegmatis. The results indicated that the different types of airborne environmental dust influenced the viability of airborne bacteria with the DH5α experiments. Furthermore, the presence of soot indicated a possible protective effect of increasing the survival rate of Mycobacterium smegmatis.

Distribution of Viable Bacteria in the Dust-Generating Natural Source Area of the Gobi Region, Mongolia

The Gobi Desert is a major source of dust events, whose frequency of occurrence and damage caused have recently significantly increased. In the present study, we investigated the types of live bacteria present in the surface soil of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, and determined their genetic identification as well as their geographical distribution. During the survey, four different topographies (dry lake bed, wadi, well, and desert steppe) were selected, and land characteristics were monitored
more &raquo; ... r moisture and temperature. The surface soil was aerobically cultured to isolate bacterial colonies, and their 16s rDNA regions were sequenced. The sequence data were identified through NCBI-BLAST analysis and generated phylogenetic trees. The results revealed two phyla and seven families of isolates from the sample points. Each isolate was characterized by their corresponding sample site. The characteristics of land use and soil surface bacteria were compared. Most of the bacteria originated from the soil, however, animal-derived bacteria were also confirmed in areas used by animals. Our findings confirmed the existence of live bacteria in the dust-generating area, suggesting that their presence could affect animal and human health. Therefore, it is necessary to further investigate dust microbes based on the One Health concept.

The Interactions Between Precipitation, Vegetation and Dust Emission Over Semi-Arid Mongolia

Recently, droughts have become widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, including in Mongolia. The ground surface condition, particularly vegetation coverage affects the occurrence of dust storms. The main sources of dust storms in the Asian region are Taklimakan and Gobi deserts. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the trend of vegetation variation and the effects of precipitation in the Gobi region. more &raquo; ... to September. We compared the patterns of interactions between precipitation and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for a period of 29 years. The precipitation and vegetation datasets were examined to investigate the trends between 1985&amp;ndash;2013. Cross correlation analysis between the precipitation and the NDVI anomalies was performed. Data analysis showed a decreasing trend in precipitation amount and its spatial shift from the east to west part of the region investigated. The vegetation in the area with the lowest precipitation was more sensitive to the precipitation dynamics than those parts with relatively higher values. The most degraded area was the southwest region of Gobi with the least precipitation.

Classification of CASI-3 hyperspectral image by subspace method

This study presents a supervised subspace learning classification method which can be applied directly to the original set of spectral bands of hyperspectral data for land cover classification purpose. The CLAss-Featuring Information Compression (CLAFIC) method is used to generate the appropriate feature subspace for each class on the training data set by Karhunen-Loève transform (also known as the principal component analysis). Then, using the iterative learning technology of averaged learning
more &raquo; ... subspace methods (ALSM) to rotate the subspaces slowly for optimizes the subspaces to get better classification accuracy. We carried out experiments with 68 spectral bands Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager-3 (CASI-3) data set. Experimental results show that Subspace method is a valid and effective alternative to other pattern recognition approaches for the mapping grass species and monitoring grass health using hyperspectral remote sensing data. Moreover, it is worth noting that the ALSMs are easily applied (i.e. they only request to set two parameters and can be directly applied to hyperspectral data) and they can entirely identify the training samples in a finite number of steps.

Effects of Different Grazing Systems on Aboveground Biomass and Plant Species Dominance in Typical Chinese and Mongolian Steppes

This study investigated the effects of different grazing systems on plant communities, and examined the causes of Mongolian grassland desertification. The typical steppes near the Chinese-Mongolian border were studied using quadrat sampling and remote sensing methods. Aboveground biomass in the steppe areas differed significantly among the three grazing systems (p < 0.05): Biomass in the grazing-prohibited areas (455.9 g) was greater than that in the rotational-grazing areas (268.4 g) and the
more &raquo; ... ntinuous grazing areas (122.2 g). Aboveground biomass was well correlated with the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI; y = 5600x2 + 260x + 110; R2 = 0.67; p < 0.05). The relative mean deviation between the aboveground biomass was calculated using this regression and the measured biomass was 29.1%. The Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) values for nomadic-grazing areas were greater than those for continuous-grazing areas in 1989, 2005, 2011, and 2016, and were significantly greater in 2011 and 2016. The SAVI values for the continuous-grazing areas were slightly, but not significantly greater, than those for the nomadic-grazing areas in 1993. Plant species that dominated in moderately degraded areas were most dominant in nomadic-grazing areas, followed by continuous-grazing areas and grazing-prohibited areas. Plant species that dominated in lightly and heavily degraded areas were most dominant in continuous-grazing areas, followed by nomadic-grazing areas and grazing-prohibited areas. Generally, continuous grazing caused more serious grassland degradation than did nomadic grazing, and nomadic-grazing areas tolerated more intense grazing than did continuous-grazing areas.

Determining the Frequency of Dry Lake Bed Formation in Semi-Arid Mongolia From Satellite Data

In the Mongolian Plateau, the desert steppe, mountains, and dry lake bed surfaces may affect the process of dust storm emissions. Among these three surface types, dry lake beds are considered to contribute a substantial amount of global dust emissions and to be responsible for "hot spots" of dust outbreaks. The land cover types in the study area were broadly divided into three types, namely desert steppe, mountains, and dry lake beds, by a classification based on Normalized Difference Water
more &raquo; ... x (NDWI) calculated from MODIS Terra satellite images, and Digital Elevation Model (DEM). This dry lake beds extracting method using remote sensing offers a new technique for identifying dust hot spots and potential untapped groundwater in the dry lands of the Gobi region. In the study area, frequencies of dry lake bed formation were calculated during the period of 2001 to 2014. The potential dry lake area corresponded well with the length of the river network based on hydrogeological characterization (R 2 = 0.59, p < 0.001). We suggest that the threshold between dry lake bed areas and the formation of ephemeral lakes in semi-arid regions is eight days of total precipitation.

Satellite Monitoring of Vegetation Response to Precipitation and Dust Storm Outbreaks in Gobi Desert Regions

We compared the patterns between precipitation and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for a period of 29 years. The precipitation and vegetation datasets were examined to investigate the trends during 1985-2013. Cross correlation analysis between the precipitation and the NDVI anomalies was performed. Data analysis showed that the variations of NDVI anomalies in the east region correspond well with the precipitation anomalies during this period. However, in the southwest region of the Gobi region, the NDVI had decreased regardless of the precipitation amount, especially since 2010. This result showed that vegetation in this region was more degraded than in the other areas.
