Online Political Discourse in the Trump Era [article]

Rishab Nithyanand, Brian Schaffner, Phillipa Gill
2017 arXiv   pre-print
We identify general trends in the (in)civility and complexity of political discussions occurring on Reddit between January 2007 and May 2017 -- a period spanning both terms of Barack Obama's presidency and the first 100 days of Donald Trump's presidency. We then investigate four factors that are frequently hypothesized as having contributed to the declining quality of American political discourse -- (1) the rising popularity of Donald Trump, (2) increasing polarization and negative

Hagfish: Champions of CO2 tolerance question the origins of vertebrate gill function

Daniel W. Baker, Brian Sardella, Jodie L. Rummer, Michael Sackville, Colin J. Brauner
2015 Scientific Reports
We thus propose that the first physiological function of the ancestral gill was acid-base regulation, and that the gill was later co-opted for its central role in gas exchange in more derived aquatic vertebrates  ...  However, in the most basal extant craniates, the hagfishes, gills play only a minor role in gas exchange.  ...  While the mechanisms and capacity for acid-base regulation via the teleost gill have been reasonably well studied, much less is known about the hagfish gill 22 .  ...

What Are the Sources of Mechanical Damping in Matsuno–Gill-Type Models?

Jia-Lin Lin, Brian E. Mapes, Weiqing Han
2008 Journal of Climate
The Matsuno-Gill model has been widely used to study the tropical large-scale circulations and atmosphere-ocean interactions.  ...  These results support the use of strong damping in the Matsuno-Gill type models, but suggest that the damping rate is spatially inhomogeneous and the CMTrelated damping increases with the strength of convection  ...  Despite of the overall success of the Matsuno-Gill model, a common critique of this model is that it requires a rapid damping time scale (on the order of a few days, e.g. 1 day in Gill 1980) to get realistic  ...

Drought frequency predicts life history strategies in Heliophila [article]

J. Grey Monroe, Brian Gill, Kathryn Turner, John K McKay
2018 bioRxiv   pre-print
Explaining variation in life history strategies is a long-standing goal of evolutionary biology. For plants, annual and perennial life histories are thought to reflect adaptation to environments that differ in the frequency of stress events such as drought. Here we test this hypothesis in Heliophila (Brassicaceae), a diverse genus of flowering plants native to Africa, by integrating 34 years of satellite-based drought measurements with 2192 herbaria occurrence records. Consistent with
more » ... s from classic life history theory, we find that perennial Heliophila species occur in environments where droughts are significantly less frequent compared to annuals. These associations are predictive while controlling for phylogeny, lending support to the hypothesis that drought related natural selection has influenced the distributions of these strategies. Additionally, the collection dates of annual and perennial species indicate that annuals escape drought prone seasons during the seed phase of their life cycle. Together, these findings provide empirical support for classic hypotheses about the drivers of life history strategy in plants - that perennials out compete annuals in environments with less frequent drought and that annuals are adapted to environments with more frequent drought by escaping drought prone seasons as seeds.

Measuring Offensive Speech in Online Political Discourse [article]

Rishab Nithyanand, Brian Schaffner, Phillipa Gill
2017 arXiv   pre-print
The Internet and online forums such as Reddit have become an increasingly popular medium for citizens to engage in political conversations. However, the online disinhibition effect resulting from the ability to use pseudonymous identities may manifest in the form of offensive speech, consequently making political discussions more aggressive and polarizing than they already are. Such environments may result in harassment and self-censorship from its targets. In this paper, we present preliminary
more » ... results from a large-scale temporal measurement aimed at quantifying offensiveness in online political discussions. To enable our measurements, we develop and evaluate an offensive speech classifier. We then use this classifier to quantify and compare offensiveness in the political and general contexts. We perform our study using a database of over 168M Reddit comments made by over 7M pseudonyms between January 2015 and January 2017 -- a period covering several divisive political events including the 2016 US presidential elections.

A Framework for Distributed Cleaning of Data Streams

Saul Gill, Brian Lee
2015 Procedia Computer Science
Vast and ever increasing quantities of data are produced by sensors in the Internet of Things (IoT). The quality of this data can be very variable due to problems with sensors, incorrect calibration etc. Data quality can be greatly enhanced by cleaning the data before it reaches its end user. This paper reports on the construction of a distributed cleaning system (DCS) to clean data streams in real-time for an environmental case-study. A combination of declarative and statistical model based
