A 20-year-old motorcycle messenger crashed into a truck transporting structural pipes. Accidentally a 3 cm diameter pipe penetrated his right inferior orbit and soft tissue below the left posterior lateral neck. When he arrived at the emergency room, there was a blunt wound with active bleeding in his right zygoma and haematoma in his left neck. On CT the metallic pipe passed through the inferior portion of the right orbit, right maxillary sinus, right posterior nasal cavity, nasophalynx, left

We performed angiography for embolisation, which showed extravasation of contrast media in the right internal maxillary artery (figure 2). After particle embolisation, the removal of the foreign body, open reduction and rigid fixation were done. Facial injuries often result in haemorrhage, which can be fatal and may result in brain hypoperfusion as well as secondary brain injuries. Most of them can be managed with effective compression or packing. And angioembolisation decreases the need for blood transfusion and provides an effective alternative for early haemostasis after packing failure, which might reduce hypoperfusion time and prevent secondary brain injury. 1 So angioembolisation has been reported as the primary choice for massive traumatic facial bleeding.

Establishment of Adequate Nutrient Intake Criteria to Achieve Target Weight Loss in Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery

Although bariatric surgery is the best treatment modality for morbidly obese patients, a 10–30% rate of weight recidivism has been reported in various specialized centers. We examined changes in energy and macronutrients after bariatric surgery and performed analysis to establish appropriate nutritional guidelines for reaching the target percentage of weight loss after surgery. A total of 189 subjects who underwent bariatric surgery were classified into success and failure groups depending on
more &raquo; ... ether or not they reached 50% loss of excess weight at 12 months after bariatric surgery. Physical examinations and dietary surveys were completed before and 1, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the optimal cutoff points for nutrient intakes for determining success after bariatric surgery were computed based on maximal Youden's index. At 6 and 12 months after surgery, the success group had significantly lower carbohydrate and fat intakes than the failure group. The cutoff calorie intake for success in weight loss was <835.0, <1132.5, and <1523.0 kcal/day at 1, 6, and 12 months post operation, respectively. With regard to protein, the cutoff intakes were >44.5, >41.5, and >86.5 g/day at 1, 6, and 12 months post operation, respectively. At 12 months, the cutoff ratio for energy obtained from carbohydrates, protein, and fat was <49.0, >24.5, and <28.0%, respectively. Our findings confirm that the level of diet control and nutrition restriction affect the achievement of target weight loss, emphasizing that long-term weight loss is related to compliance with nutrient recommendations.

Formation, evolution, and vanishing of bubbles are common phenomena in our nature, which can be easily observed in boiling or falling waters, carbonated drinks, gas-forming electrochemical reactions, etc. However, the morphology and the growth dynamics of the bubbles at nanoscale have not been fully investigated owing to the lack of proper imaging tools that can visualize nanoscale objects in liquid phase. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, that the nanobubbles in water encapsulated by
more &raquo; ... phene membrane can be visualized by in situ ultrahigh vacuum transmission electron microscopy (UHV-TEM), showing the critical radius of nanobubbles determining its unusual long-term stability as well as two distinct growth mechanisms of merging nanobubbles (Ostwald ripening and coalescing) depending on their relative sizes. Interestingly, the gas transport through ultrathin water membranes at nanobubble interface is free from dissolution, which is clearly different from conventional gas transport that includes condensation, transmission and evaporation. Our finding is expected to provide a deeper insight to understand unusual chemical, biological and environmental phenomena where nanoscale gas-state is involved.

Association factor analysis between osteoporosis with cerebral artery disease

The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical association factors between osteoporosis and cerebral artery disease in Korean population. Two hundred nineteen postmenopausal women and men undergoing cerebral computed tomography angiography were enrolled in this study to evaluate the cerebral artery disease by cross-sectional study. more &raquo; ... on. History of osteoporotic fracture was assessed using medical record, and radiographic data such as simple radiography, MRI, and bone scan. Bone mineral density was checked by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. We reviewed clinical characteristics in all patients and also performed subgroup analysis for total or extracranial/ intracranial cerebral artery disease group retrospectively. We performed statistical analysis by means of chi-square test or Fisher's exact test for categorical variables and Student's t-test or Wilcoxon's rank sum test for continuous variables. We also used univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the factors associated with the prevalence of cerebral artery disease. A two-tailed p-value of less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. All statistical analyses were performed using R (version 3.1.3; The R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria) and SPSS (version 14.0; SPSS, Inc, Chicago, Ill, USA). Of the 219 patients, 142 had cerebral artery disease. All vertebral fracture was observed in 29 (13.24%) patients. There was significant difference in hip fracture according to the presence or absence of cerebral artery disease. In logistic regression analysis, osteoporotic hip fracture was significantly associated with extracranial cerebral artery disease after adjusting for multiple risk factors. Females with osteoporotic hip fracture were associated with total calcified cerebral artery disease. Some clinical factors such as age, hypertension, and osteoporotic hip fracture, smoking history and anti-osteoporosis drug use were associated with cerebral artery disease.

Adsorption / Desorption Performance and NOx Removal Efficiency of BaO Loaded V2O5-WO3/TiO2 Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalyst

Recently, directly emitted NOx upon start-up has been spotlighted as a significant emissions problem. BaO loaded V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalysts were synthesized with various contents of barium which was a representative NOx adsorbent and their NOx adsorption, desorption, and removal efficiency were shown. The phase of BaO was changed to a BaO or BaCO 3 phase, which is capable of NOx adsorption when loaded on the TiO 2 support. The more BaO contents were
more &raquo; ... sed, the higher the intensity of Ba 2+ , the NOx adsorption site, measured by FT-IR. Also, NOx storage capacities of the BaO loaded catalysts, which contained 5 wt% and 10 wt% of BaO, were calculated to be 12.59 µmol/g and 20.21 µmol/g at 200°C respectively. The improvement in NOx storage capacity was explained by the increase in BaO content. And then the BaO loaded catalyst desorbed NOx in the temperature range of 345 to 360°C, which was the catalyst operating temperature. The NOx removal efficiency increased by reducing BaO content, and the catalyst loaded with 3 wt% of BaO showed 98% NOx removal efficiency at 350°C. The adsorbed NOx at 200°C was desorbed at 300~400°C and then removed by the SCR reaction. The synthesized NOx trap functional SCR catalyst can be applied to reduce the NOx generated at the time of equipment start-up at low temperatures.

CD5L as an Extracellular Vesicle-Derived Biomarker for Liquid Biopsy of Lung Cancer

Cancer screening and diagnosis can be achieved by analyzing specific molecules within serum-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs). This study sought to profile EV-derived proteins to identify potential lung cancer biomarkers. EVs were isolated from 80 serum samples from healthy individuals and cancer patients via polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based precipitation and immunoaffinity separation using antibodies against CD9, CD63, CD81, and EpCAM. Proteomic analysis was performed using 2-D gel
more &raquo; ... resis and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI–TOF MS). The expression of proteins that were differentially upregulated in the EVs or tissue of lung cancer samples was validated by Western blotting. The area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to assess the predictability of each differentially expressed protein (DEP) for lung cancer. A total of 55 upregulated protein spots were selected, seven of which (CD5L, CLEC3B, ITIH4, SERFINF1, SAA4, SERFINC1, and C20ORF3) were found to be expressed at high levels in patient-derived EVs by Western blotting. Meanwhile, only the expression of EV CD5L correlated with that in cancer tissues. CD5L also demonstrated the highest AUC value (0.943) and was found to be the core regulator in a pathway related to cell dysfunction. Cumulatively, these results show that EV-derived CD5L may represent a potential biomarker—detected via a liquid biopsy—for the noninvasive diagnosis of lung cancer.

Meningeal Carcinomatosis Presenting with Isolated Pseudotumor Cerebri
