Conduites de troupeaux ovins en extensif

1998 Annales de Zootechnie
Diversity of flock management in extensive conditions. Management practices in 13 extensively farmed sheep flocks (stocking level less than 1 LU.ha-I principal forage surface) in Montmorillonnais (a west-central region of France) were analyzed with attention to three components of the farming projects: autonomous foraging goals (breeding based on grass), attention to buyers' requests (records of first semester sales) and simplicity of flock management. Three different farming styles were
more » ... ied that either limited the amount of concentrate used, encouraged sales early in the year, or that involved both of these factors. In the most autonomic systems, savings in concentrate concern either the ewes and the lambs. A simple farming style, indicated by a stable grouping of ewes, was observed in situations where the farmer was the only permanent employee (four out of six cases). The technical and economic performances (gross margin per ewe) were more or less equivalent whatever the management style or ewe grouping. Taking into account the spreading of lambing throughout the year, the different ways of grouping ewes and the changes in stocking level during the winter all helped to clarify the technical questions associated with extensive farming. Do we live in a "Dirac-Milne" universe? [article]

Aurélien Benoit-Lévy, Gabriel Chardin
2009 arXiv   pre-print
The LCDM standard model, although an excellent parametrization of the present cosmological data, requires two as yet unobserved components, Dark Matter and Dark Energy, for more than 95% of the Universe, and a high level of fine-tuning. Faced to this unsatisfactory situation, we study an unconventional cosmology, the Dirac-Milne universe, a matter-antimatter symmetric cosmology, in which antimatter is supposed to present a negative active gravitational mass. We show that this universe
more » ... satisfies the cosmological tests for the age of the Universe, Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis, and Type Ia Supernovae data. Most surprisingly, it also provides the degree scale for the first acoustic peak of the Cosmological Microwave Background. This simple model, without any adjustable parameter or need for Dark Matter or Dark Energy, is a reminder that we should look for simpler and more motivated cosmological models than the present LCDM standard model.

Éléments de réussite économique des élevages ovins extensifs du Montmorillonnais

1998 Annales de Zootechnie
Ways to have good economic results in Montmorillonnais's extensive sheep farms. This study demonstrates the special character of extensive farms located in the midst of large meat sheep farms in Montmorillonnais (an unfavorised zone south of Vienne, France). Characteristic production systems are found in this region, from extensive (with a stocking rate of less than 0.85 LU.ha-' PFS) to intensive ( 1.40 LU.ha-' PFS). There are large differences between these systems, even between the various

Some intensive farmers make a decent net income as do some grazers and specialised extensive farmers. The three essential factors are the margin per ewe, the work productivity and the infrastructure costs. On extensive farms, the best results are found for moderate numerical pro-* Correspondence and reprints Tél. :

Towards microstructure fingerprinting: Estimation of tissue properties from a dictionary of Monte Carlo diffusion MRI simulations

Gaëtan Rensonnet, Benoît Scherrer, Gabriel Girard, Aleksandar Jankovski, Simon K. Warfield, Benoît Macq, Jean-Philippe Thiran, Maxime Taquet
2019 NeuroImage
Many closed-form analytical models have been proposed to relate the diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) signal to microstructural features of white matter tissues. These models generally make assumptions about the tissue and the diffusion processes which often depart from the biophysical reality, limiting their reliability and interpretability in practice. Monte Carlo simulations of the random walk of water molecules are widely recognized to provide near groundtruth for
more » ... signals. However, they have mostly been limited to the validation of simpler models rather than used for the estimation of microstructural properties. This work proposes a general framework which leverages Monte Carlo simulations for the estimation of physically interpretable microstructural parameters, both in single and in crossing fascicles of axons. Monte Carlo simulations of DW-MRI signals, or fingerprints, are pre-computed for a large collection of microstructural configurations. At every voxel, the microstructural parameters are estimated by optimizing a sparse combination of these fingerprints. Extensive synthetic experiments showed that our approach achieves accurate and robust estimates in the presence of noise and uncertainties over fixed or input parameters. In an in vivo rat model of spinal cord injury, our approach provided microstructural parameters that showed better correspondence with histology than five closed-form models of the diffusion signal: MMWMD, NODDI, DIAMOND, WMTI and MAPL. On whole-brain in vivo data from the human connectome project (HCP), our method exhibited spatial distributions of apparent axonal radius and axonal density indices in keeping with ex vivo studies. This work paves the way for microstructure fingerprinting with Monte Carlo simulations used directly at the modeling stage and not only as a validation tool. It is approximated from the discrete trajectory r l by a numerical quadrature such as a rectangle rule Rensonnet et al.
