Properties of the Galactic Bar from Hydrodynamical Simulations

Benjamin J. Weiner, J.A. Sellwood
1996 Symposium - International astronomical union
Gas flow in a barred potential could be consistent with the observations, however. We have compared the observations to 2-D hydrodynamical simulations of gas flows in a family of barred potentials.  ...  The gas flow pattern is very sensitive to the assumed potential, and thel–Vdistribution of cool gas in the inner Galaxy places strong constraints on several parameters of the Milky Way bar.  ...  WEINER AND J.A.  ...

Properties of the Galactic Bar from Hydrodynamical Simulations [chapter]

Benjamin J. Weiner, J. A. Sellwood
1996 Unsolved Problems of the Milky Way
Gas flow in a barred potential could be consistent with the observations, however. We have compared the observations to 2-D hydrodynamical simulations of gas flows in a family of barred potentials.  ...  Each model is specified by seven parameters for these components, and the pattern speed of the bar.  ...  viewed at 35° to the major axis of the bar.  ...

HOT DISKS AND DELAYED BAR FORMATION

Kartik Sheth, Jason Melbourne, Debra Meloy Elmegreen, Bruce G. Elmegreen, E. Athanassoula, Roberto G. Abraham, Benjamin J. Weiner
2012 Astrophysical Journal
We find that bars are preferentially found in galaxies that are massive and dynamically cold (rotation-dominated) and on the stellar Tully-Fisher relationship, as is the case for barred spirals in the  ...  A proposed explanation for this "downsizing" of the bar formation / stellar structure formation is that the lower mass galaxies may not form bars because they could be dynamically hotter than more massive  ...  As the details of the observations and measurement techniques have been described elsewhere (Weiner et al. 2006a (Weiner et al. , 2006b Kassin et al. 2007 ), we simply summarize the key points here: a  ...

Fabry-Perot Observations and Hydrodynamical Simulations of the Barred Spiral NGC 4123

Benjamin J. Weiner, J. A. Sellwood, T. B. Williams
1996 International Astronomical Union Colloquium
The simulated gas flow is quite sensitive to the details of the potential, which enables us to constrain parameters such as theM/LIof the bar and the bar pattern speed.  ...  Requiring models to produce shocks with the correct alignment constrains the Lagrange pointL1(corotation) to be at a radius 1.1 – 1.4 times the semimajor axis of the bar,i.e. the bar is a fast rotator.  ...  edge of the bar.  ...

The Properties of the Galactic Bar Implied by Gas Kinematics in the Inner Milky Way

Benjamin J. Weiner, J. A. Sellwood

In particular we suggest that the bar must be fairly strong, must have an ILR, and cannot be too end-on, with the bar major axis at 35\deg +/- 5\deg to the line of sight.  ...  Several lines of evidence suggest that the Galaxy is barred, and gas flow in a barred potential could be consistent with the observed "forbidden" velocities and other features in the data.  ...  NGC 1300, England 1989; NGC 1398 , Moore & Gottesman 1995; and NGC 4123, Weiner et al. 1999) .  ...

2001 Astrophysical Journal
The non-circular streaming motions in barred galaxies are sensitive to the mass of the bar and can be used to lift the degeneracy between disk and dark matter halo encountered when fitting axisymmetric  ...  A Fabry-Perot H-alpha velocity field shows velocity jumps of >100 km/sec at the location of the dust lanes within the bar, indicating shocks in the gas flow.  ...  Athanassoula 1992b; Piner et al. 1995; Weiner & Sellwood 1999; Paper II) . We present a novel system providing summaries for Computer Science publications. Through a qualitative user study, we identified the most valuable scenarios for discovery, exploration and understanding of scientific documents. Based on these findings, we built a system that retrieves and summarizes scientific documents for a given information need, either in form of a free-text query or by choosing categorized values such as scientific tasks, datasets and more. Our system ingested 270,000
