High Accuracy Face Geometry Capture using a Smartphone Video [article]

What's the most accurate 3D model of your face you can obtain while sitting at your desk? We attempt to answer this question in our work. High fidelity face reconstructions have so far been limited to either studio settings or through expensive 3D scanners. On the other hand, unconstrained reconstruction methods are typically limited by low-capacity models. Our method reconstructs accurate face geometry of a subject using a video shot from a smartphone in an unconstrained environment. Our
more &raquo; ... ch takes advantage of recent advances in visual SLAM, keypoint detection, and object detection to improve accuracy and robustness. By not being constrained to a model subspace, our reconstructed meshes capture important details while being robust to noise and being topologically consistent. Our evaluations show that our method outperforms current single and multi-view baselines by a significant margin, both in terms of geometric accuracy and in capturing person-specific details important for making realistic looking models.

Supervised deep learning methods have shown promising results for the task of monocular depth estimation; but acquiring ground truth is costly, and prone to noise as well as inaccuracies. While synthetic datasets have been used to circumvent above problems, the resultant models do not generalize well to natural scenes due to the inherent domain shift. Recent adversarial approaches for domain adaption have performed well in mitigating the differences between the source and target domains. But
more &raquo; ... se methods are mostly limited to a classification setup and do not scale well for fully-convolutional architectures. In this work, we propose AdaDepth - an unsupervised domain adaptation strategy for the pixel-wise regression task of monocular depth estimation. The proposed approach is devoid of above limitations through a) adversarial learning and b) explicit imposition of content consistency on the adapted target representation. Our unsupervised approach performs competitively with other established approaches on depth estimation tasks and achieves state-of-the-art results in a semi-supervised setting.

The anti-synthetase syndrome in a type 1 diabetes

Anti-synthetase syndrome is an autoimmune disease associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD), dermatomyositis and polymyositis. It has been recognized as an important cause of autoimmune inflammatory myopathy in a subset of patients with dermatomyositis. 37-year-old male, known case of type 1 diabetes mellitus, came with complaints of: generalized anasarca, pain in both knees, ankles, wrist and small joints of fingers. He also had dyspnoea on exertion, chronic non-productive cough, and
more &raquo; ... r off and on, all for 1 month. Initially all involvement was attributed to diabetes. For joint pain an antinuclear antibodies (ANA) was sent. He turned out to be anti-Jo1, antibody positive. Rash on hands was diagnosed by dermatologist as, mechanic's hand, hence diagnosed as an inflammatory myopathy with dermatomyositis anti-synthetase syndrome. Patient was successfully treated with immunosuppressants and supportive treatment and responded to tablet Prednisolone and Mycophenolate mofetil. The patient had one major and 2 minor criteria-ILD, arthritis and Mechanic's hand and anti-Jo 1 antibody positive. Thus, diagnosed as anti-synthetase syndrome with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

A case of autoimmune hypothyroidism presented as overlap syndrome of mixed connective tissue disorder

Mixed connective tissue disease is a distinct complex overlap disorder characterised by combination of clinical features of systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, polymyositis and rheumatoid arthritis. Higher levels of anti-U1-ribonucleoprotein (anti-U1RNP) antibody has been found in these patients. 39 year old female, known case of hypothyroidism, came with complaints of multiple joint pains with swelling associated with morning stiffness of fingers since last 2 years. She also had
more &raquo; ... ryness of skin, loss of appetite, constipation, difficulty in swallowing and dyspnea on exertion since last 2 months. Considering the joint pains an antinuclear antibody (ANA) was sent. She turned out to be RNP, Sm, Ro 52, Mi-2 positive. Anti-CCP, rheumatoid factors (RA), Raynaud's phenomenon all were positive. Rheumatologist opinion was taken and she was diagnosed as mixed connective tissue disorder with hypothyroidism. Patient was successfully treated with immunosuppressants and supportive measures and responded well to tablet methotrexate, prednisone, nifedipine and hydroxychloroquine. Our patient had one major and 3 minor criteria: anti RNP antibody positive, Raynaud's phenomenon, swollen fingers and synovitis. Thus, diagnosed as mixed connective tissue disease.

When crowdsourcing systems are used in combination with machine inference systems in the real world, they benefit the most when the machine system is deeply integrated with the crowd workers. However, if researchers wish to integrate the crowd with "off-the-shelf" machine classifiers, this deep integration is not always possible. This work explores two strategies to increase accuracy and decrease cost under this setting. First, we show that reordering tasks presented to the human can create a
more &raquo; ... gnificant accuracy improvement. Further, we show that greedily choosing parameters to maximize machine accuracy is sub-optimal, and joint optimization of the combined system improves performance.
