Plan Selection based on Query Clustering [chapter]

Query optimization is a computationally intensive process, especially for complex queries. We present here a tool, called PLASTIC, that can be used by query optimizers to amortize the optimization cost. Our scheme groups similar queries into clusters and uses the optimizer-generated plan for the cluster representative to execute all future queries assigned to the cluster. Query similarity is evaluated based on a comparison of query structures and the associated table schemas and statistics, and
more &raquo; ... a classifier is employed for efficient cluster assignments. Experiments with a variety of queries on a commercial optimizer show that PLASTIC predicts the correct plan choice in most cases, thereby providing significantly improved query optimization times. Further, when errors are made, the additional execution cost incurred due to the sub-optimal plan choices is marginal.

Development and ripening in fruit is a unique phase in the life cycle of higher plants which encompasses several stages progressively such as fruit development, its maturation, ripening and finally senescence. During ripening phase, several physiological and biochemical changes take place through differential expression of various genes that are developmentally regulated. Expression and/or suppression of these genes contribute to various changes in the fruit that make it visually attractive and
more &raquo; ... edible. However, in fleshy fruit massive losses accrue during post harvest handling of the fruit which may run into billions of dollars worldwide. This encouraged scientists to look for various ways to save these losses. Genetic engineering appears to be the most promising and cost effective means to prevent these losses. Most fleshy fruit ripen in the presence of ethylene and once ripening has been initiated proceeds uncontrollably. Ethylene evokes several responses during ripening through a signaling cascade and thousands of genes participate which not only sets in ripening but also responsible for its spoilage. Slowing down post ripening process in fleshy fruit has been the major focus of ripening-related research. In this review article, various developments that have taken place in the last decade with respect to identifying and altering the function of ripening-related genes have been described. Role of ethylene and ethylene-responsive genes in ripening of fleshy fruit is also included. Taking clues from the studies in tomato as a model fruit, few case studies are reviewed.

Effect of different weed management practices on growth and yield of summer sesame (Sesamum indicum. L)

A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of different weed management practices on growth and yield of summer sesame (Sesamum indicum. L) during summer season of 2018 at Agricultural Farm of Palli Siksha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan, West Bengal. Eight weed management treatments namely-pendimethalin 750 g/ha at 1 DAS, butachlor 1000 g/ha at 3 DAS, pendimethalin 750 g/ha at 1 DAS fb 1 HW at 30 DAS, butachlor 1000 g/ha at 3 DAS fb 1 HW at 30 DAS, HW at 15 DAS, HW at 15 and
more &raquo; ... 0 DAS, weed free check and weedy check were laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications. The result revealed that integration of pendimethalin and butachlor each with one HW at 30 DAS recorded higher growth attributes, yield and yield components than their sole application. Although pendimethalin and butachlor fb one HW at 30 DAS registered higher gross return (₹82,687/ha and ₹76,405/ha, respectively) and net return ((₹56,825/ha and ₹51,067/ha, respectively) but the return per rupee invested was higher in their sole application (3.27 and 3.20, respectively). Based on overall performance, sole application of pendimethalin 750 g/ha at 1 DAS and butachlor 1000 g/ha at 3 DAS may be considered as promising cost-effective herbicides for improvement on seed yield in summer sesame.

Optimization of Ethylene inhibitor-mediated controlled ripening of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Mature green tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were treated with water, Salicylic Acid (SA), 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), Ethanol, Gibberellic Acid (GA) and Maleic Acid (MA) at specific concentration. 1-MCP, GA and Ethanol inhibited the ripening process of the tomatoes and the food quality was also retained. However, SA and MA failed to delay the ripening process of the tomatoes. It was found that the ripening process was delayed by 1-MCP significantly, compared to any other approach and
more &raquo; ... fore optimum dosage of 1-MCP was investigated. Tomatoes treated with 200, 500 and 800 µg/L of 1-MCP delayed ripening of tomato by 11, 18 and 20 days but the food quality was affected slightly with the increase in 1-MCP concentration. 500 µg/L solution of 1-MCP delayed the ripening process of the tomatoes without changing the food quality significantly. This indicates that 1-MCP application (500 µg/L solution) can be used effectively to extend the storage life up to 18 days without any adverse ramification on the quality of ripe tomato and can be adopted commercially to increase the shelf life in semi-ripen stage longer time at room temperature.

Students in the modern and fast changing world are trying to choose their career in such a way which would ultimately help them to achieve their success in life. Career choice is a major life decision. Each and every individual is coping with dynamic world and its demands. The present investigation has been designed to study the personality factors and impact of parental and social influence on career choice of the students who want to choose their career as engineer. Accordingly, a group of
more &raquo; ... higher secondary students (under West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education) were selected as sample in this investigation. On the other hand, another group of 30 professionals who are engaged in the profession as engineer were also selected as sample in this investigation. Four tools, viz., (a) General Information Schedule (one for the students and the other for professionals), (b) Sixteen Personality Factors [Form-C] Questionnaire (1965), (c) Perceived Impact of Parental Influence Questionnaire and (d) Perceived Impact of Social Influence Questionnaire were used in this investigation. The overall findings reveal that those who want to choose their career as engineer is matched with the professionals. Personality factors take a vital role regarding career choice. The findings also reveal that there seems to be indication of moderate level of parental as well as social influence on career choice. Besides this, monthly income of the family and gender difference also have significant role in connection with career choice. Adequate measures may be taken by parents, teachers, counselors and other well-wishers who are able to help the students to choose a particular career for their future development.

The current study was undertaken to evaluate thrombolytic, anthelmintic, anti-oxidant, cytotoxic properties with phytochemical screening of methanolic extract of X. indicum leaves. In anti-oxidant activity evaluation by two potential experiments namely total phenolic content determination and free radical scavenging assay by 2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH), the leaves extract possess good anti-oxidant property. In the brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the crude extract showed potent (LC<sub>50</sub> 1.3 μg/mL) cytotoxic activity compare to the vincristine sulfate as a positive control (LC<sub>50</sub> 0.8 μg/mL). </p><p> </p>

Little is known about mechanisms responsible for the temperature-sensitive (ts) phenotype, or of the transferability of ts mutants of a specific gene between organisms. Using a structure-based approach, nine ts mutants of Gal4 were generated in yeast by mutating four DNA binding residues. Two of these nine yeast ts mutants were cloned into P element vectors under control of the Elav and GMR promoters and transgenic Drosophila lines were generated. Both of these yeast ts mutants show a ts phenotype in Drosophila and result in rapid induction of reporter gene expression upon shifting to the permissive temperature. Exposed, functional residues involved in protein-ligand or protein-protein interactions appear to be attractive candidate sites for generating ts mutants that are transferable between organisms.

The rapid industrialization and urbanization of developing countries such as India have encroached on cultivable lands to meet the demands of an ever-increasing population. The altered land use patterns with increased fertilizer use has increased crop yields with leaching of major portion of the applied nutrients from the soil. Nitrates and phosphates are the agricultural pollutants that are discharged into aquifers due to anthropogenic reasons causing severe environmental and health problems.
more &raquo; ... roduction of these nutrients requires energy and finite resources (rock phosphate, which has gradually depleting reserves). An alternative management strategy would be to sequester excess nutrients within a biomass that is reused for agriculture. Two discrete enriched microbial consortia with the potential of simultaneous nitrate and phosphate sequestration upon application as biofertilizer restricted them within the plant root zone, ensuring prevention of eutrophication through leaching while making it available for uptake by plants. The nutrient accumulated biomass enhanced the crop yield by 21.88% during mung bean cultivation with maintained elemental content and other nutritional qualities. The major drawback of conventional biofertilizer application (slow release and action) could be overcome using this formulation leading to environmental protection, crop yield enhancement and soil fertility maintenance post-cultivation.

Adolescence is a journey from the world of childhood to the world of adulthood. In India adolescents constitute 21.4% of the population that comprises one-fifth of the total population. The health and nutritional status of the children is an index of the national investment in the development of future manpower. Thus present study was undertaken to assess the nutritional status of school going adolescent girls in semi urban area of West Bengal. This study was conducted among 746 school children
more &raquo; ... of 11-18 years studying in four girls' schools in Hooghly district. School was selected by simple random sample in two municipality areas. Nutritional status was evaluated using anthropometric indicators recommended by WHO(World Health Organization) experts committee. Height for age below 3 rd percentile of NCHS (National Centre for Health statistics) /WHO reference values was classified as stunting. Thinness was defined as BMI-for-age <5 th percentile of WHO/NCHS standard data. Over weight and obese were defined as BMI-for -age >85 th percentile and >95 th percentile respectively. The present study highlight the duel burdens of underweight and overweight in semi urban adolescent girls. Overweight is more urgent problem than underweight. Lifestyle (physical activity and fast food intake habit) was one of the contributing factor of overweight. To minimized both forms of malnutrition, it is essential to educate and create awareness programmes at the community levels. Health education programmes and effective policies are urgently required to promote healthy eating and physical activity.
