Agenesis of lung,a rare congenital anomaly,may present in adult life with features of recurrent chest infections and radiologically may mimic many common conditions presenting as opaque hemithorax with ipsilateral shifting of mediastinum.Here, a case of a young man presenting with frequent attacks of cough expectoration and progressive dyspnoea since childhood,proved to be a case of left pulmonary agenesis on CT scan and bronchoscopy, is to be discussed.

Emerging Electrical Properties of Graphene incorporated Photosynthetic Biofilms [article]

We report emergence of a new electrical material by growing photosynthetic biofilm on a Dirac material, graphene. The material showed new conducting as well as semiconducting properties. Frequency dependent capacitive spectra further indicated presence of electrical isosbestic points(at 0.8 and 9MHz), implying two state dieletric transitions at critical frequencies. A notable reult was a Schottky diode like behavior in the IV curve. Voltage dependent conductance with conductance peaks near the
more » ... chottky diode threshold was observed. We obtained facilitated growth of photosynthetic biofilm in presence of graphene. Lastly higher bacterial metabolism i was seen in the biofilm in contact with graphene as compared to its normal growth condition. For this zero band gap Dirac material this can only be interpreted as coupling of the electron transport chain of the bacterial biofilm and the graphene electron cloud .

In this paper, the notion of ϕ-metric is developed by making a suitable modification in triangle inequality. It is shown that spaces like S-metric, b-metric, etc. are ϕ-metrizable. Unlike metric, concerned ϕ-metric can be easily constructed. The structure of ϕ-metric spaces is studied and some fixed point theorems are established.

Multi-Tier Federated Learning for Vertically Partitioned Data [article]

We consider decentralized model training in tiered communication networks. Our network model consists of a set of silos, each holding a vertical partition of the data. Each silo contains a hub and a set of clients, with the silo's vertical data shard partitioned horizontally across its clients. We propose Tiered Decentralized Coordinate Descent (TDCD), a communication-efficient decentralized training algorithm for such two-tiered networks. more » ... lo perform multiple local gradient steps before sharing updates with their hub. Each hub adjusts its coordinates by averaging its workers' updates, and then hubs exchange intermediate updates with one another. We present a theoretical analysis of our algorithm and show the dependence of the convergence rate on the number of vertical partitions, the number of local updates, and the number of clients in each hub. We further validate our approach empirically via simulation-based experiments using a variety of datasets and both convex and non-convex objectives.

An alternate model for protective measurements of two-level systems [article]

In this article we propose an alternate model for the so called protective measurements, more appropriately adiabatic measurements of a spin 1/2 system where the apparatus is also a quantum system with a finite dimensional Hilbert space. This circumvents several technical as well as conceptual issues that arise when dealing with an infinite dimensional Hilbert space as in the analysis of conventional Stern-Gerlach experiment. more » ... inuous and it directly measures expectation values without altering the state of the system(when the unknown original state is a nondegenerate eigenstate of the system Hamiltonian, in the limit of ideal adiabatic conditions. We have also computed the corrections arising out of the inevitable departures from ideal adiabaticity i.e the time of measurement being large but finite. To overcome the conceptual difficulties with a quantum apparatus, we have simulated a classical apparatus as a large assembly of spin-1/2 systems. We end this article with a conclusion and a discussion of some future issues.

Self-interacting neutrinos as a solution to the Hubble tension? [article]

Self-interaction among the neutrinos in the early Universe has been proposed as a solution to the Hubble tension, a discrepancy between the measured values of the Hubble constant from CMB and low-redshift data. However, flavor-universal neutrino self-interaction is highly constrained by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and other laboratory experiments such as, tau and K-meson decay, double-neutrino beta decay etc. We study the cosmology when only one or two neutrino states are self-interacting.
