The role of prescribed fire in the provision of regulating ecosystem services of Spanish heathlands

Leonor Calvo, Sara Huerta, Elena Marcos, Javier Calvo-Fernández, Angela Taboada
2015 Ecological Questions
Management strategies developed in heathlands, such as burning, produce changes in plant community composition and rejuvenation of Calluna vulgaris plants, which affect their carbon sequestration capacity (Kopittke et al., 2013) . In this paper we aim to evaluate the impact of management strategies (prescribed burning) in the framework of N deposition on the regulating ecosystem services (capacity of carbon sequestration) provided by Cantabrian heathlands. We try to answer the following
more » ... s: 1) Does prescribed burning have a positive effect on carbon sequestration in heathlands? 2) Does increased N deposition have the potential to alter carbon storage after burning in heathlands? 3) Which is the main ecosystem compartment for carbon storage in heathlands?

Industrial Upgrading in Mixed Market Economies: The Spanish Case

Angela Garcia Calvo
2014 Social Science Research Network
This paper discusses convergence through the concept of industrial upgrading and its application to the Spanish case. The paper explains the recent rise of Spain's firms in high value-added service sectors and the fall in capital and skill-intensive manufacturing through the characterisation of Spain's institutional structure. I argue that Spain's institutional system is defined by peer coordination (PC), a non-hierarchical form of strategic coordination based on the presence of public-private

Under PC, Spanish firms in complex services sectors enabled the state to achieve developmental goals in exchange for sector-specific advantages that facilitated upgrading. The absence of effective intermediary agents hindered the development of PC in manufacturing sectors dominated by small firms. Furthermore, PC limited their access to the patient capital and stable demand necessary to develop new, complex products. The central state and some regional governments were able to circumvent these limitations only in exceptional cases.

Sizing Milking Groups in Small Cow Dairies of Mediterranean Countries

Angela Calvo, Gianfranco Airoldi
2020 Animals
A dairy farmer chooses the number of milking groups in function of the herd size, stall type and milking system also in small cow dairies (number of animals lower than 100–120). In these dairies, there are different milking systems (bucket, trolley, pipeline, little autotandem, herringbone or parallel parlors) and each of them has a different work routine. The knowledge of the routine is the starting point for assessing the milking installation, because it determines the number of milked cows

Different milking systems have common tasks (as pre-dipping, inspecting foremilk, udder preparation, attaching teat cups, post-dipping), but in the meantime there are different operations that characterize each specific routine (e.g., animal entry and exit if there is a parlor, bucket, trolley or milking group positioning if tie-stall). For this reason, we surveyed twenty small dairy farms located in the Piedmont Region (Italy) with different milking systems to correctly acquire the specific milking routines. Different models were therefore studied using the observed routines in in the examined farms. These models were then used to calculate the number of milked cows per hour and the number of milking groups. The main findings were simple equations, specific for each milking system, easily accessible by the farmer to correctly size his milking system.

A short supply chain to guarantee wood-chip quality

Roberto Deboli, Massimiliano Ruggeri, Angela Calvo
2014 Applied Mathematical Sciences
It is important to know the origin of the wood chip and to verify the whole transport chain, from the forest to the processing plant. This can be done using electronic customized devices to monitor the entire process: these technologies, already used in other fields, are based on the transmission of GPS data via GPRS-UMTS-HSDPA connection. In the wood chip supply chain application they must be adapted to the context, properly tailored to interface with the electronics onboard the machine and to
more » ... generate usable arrays of data, including performance and quality. In this work the entire chain is controlled by means of a novel electronic architecture onboard the machine, interfaced with a communication system connected to a central server acting as a supervisor. All the machines are equipped with a GPS receiver, a data communication module and a CAN (SAE J1939) interface: machines data are sent to a central server, through an internet connection, and collected in a database ready for web services. A communication protocol has been designed to optimize data transfer and to minimize the cost. To increase the product value, an automated integral sensor (capacitive type) for wood chip humidity determination was implemented. With the fleet management system installed on the machine, cruise controls data (using a GPS system) are acquired, other than all the machine states (through CAN line inside the machine) and wood humidity. 6590 Roberto Deboli et al. The data base (MySQL standard) permits, moreover, to the system administrator and to the user to manage all these information. Another important result is the web access that permits to monitor the fleet situation (route, engine status, time of journey, climatic conditions) at any moment with a screenshot. The capacitive sensor for humidity measurements gives good results, especially in the case of chips with dimensions comprised between 34 and 64 mm and an initial humidity (on wet basis) of 45%.
