A Quality Framework for Agile Requirements: A Practitioner's Perspective [article]

Petra Heck, Andy Zaidman
<span title="2014-06-18">2014</span> <i > arXiv </i> &nbsp; <span class="release-stage" >pre-print</span>
Verification activities are necessary to ensure that the requirements are specified in a correct way. However, until now requirements verification research has focused on traditional up-front requirements. Agile or just-in-time requirements are by definition incomplete, not specific and might be ambiguous when initially specified, indicating a different notion of 'correctness'. We analyze how verification of agile requirements quality should be performed, based on literature of traditional and
more &raquo; ... gile requirements. This leads to an agile quality framework, instantiated for the specific requirement types of feature requests in open source projects and user stories in agile projects. We have performed an initial qualitative validation of our framework for feature requests with eight practitioners from the Dutch agile community, receiving overall positive feedback.

Micro-clones are tiny duplicated pieces of code; they typically comprise only a few statements or lines. In this paper, we expose the "last line effect," the phenomenon that the last line or statement in a micro-clone is much more likely to contain an error than the previous lines or statements. We do this by analyzing 208 open source projects and reporting on 202 faulty micro-clones.

Promises and Perils of Inferring Personality on GitHub [article]

<span title="2021-07-15">2021</span> <i > arXiv </i> &nbsp; <span class="release-stage" >pre-print</span>
Personality plays a pivotal role in our understanding of human actions and behavior. Today, the applications of personality are widespread, built on the solutions from psychology to infer personality. In software engineering, for instance, one widely used solution to infer personality uses textual communication data. As studies on personality in software engineering continue to grow, it is imperative to understand the performance of these solutions. This paper compares the inferential ability
more &raquo; ... three widely studied text-based personality tests against each other and the ground truth on GitHub. We explore the challenges and potential solutions to improve the inferential ability of personality tests. Our study shows that solutions for inferring personality are far from being perfect. Software engineering communications data can infer individual developer personality with an average error rate of 41%. In the best case, the error rate can be reduced up to 36% by following our recommendations.

How (Much) Do Developers Test?

Moritz Beller, Georgios Gousios, Andy Zaidman
<span title="">2015</span> <i title="IEEE"> <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" href="https://fatcat.wiki/container/wvv27s77dvd5flktsj246kcxwu" style="color: black;">2015 IEEE/ACM 37th IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering</a> </i> &nbsp;
What do we know about software testing in the real world? It seems we know from Fred Brooks' seminal work "The Mythical Man-Month" that 50% of project effort is spent on testing. However, due to the enormous advances in software engineering in the past 40 years, the question stands: Is this observation still true? In fact, was it ever true? The vision for our research is to settle the discussion about Brooks' estimation once and for all: How much do developers test? Does developers' estimation
more &raquo; ... n how much they test match reality? How frequently do they execute their tests, and is there a relationship between test runtime and execution frequency? What are the typical reactions to failing tests? Do developers solve actual defects in the production code, or do they merely relax their test assertions? Emerging results from 40 software engineering students show that students overestimate their testing time threefold, and 50% of them test as little as 4% of their time, or less. Having proven the scalability of our infrastructure, we are now extending our case study with professional software engineers from open-source and industrial organizations.

Program comprehension is an important concern in software maintenance because these tasks generally require a degree of knowledge of the system at hand. While the use of dynamic analysis in this process has become increasingly popular, the literature indicates that dealing with the huge amounts of dynamic information remains a formidable challenge. Although various trace reduction techniques have been proposed to address these scalability concerns, their applicability in different contexts
more &raquo; ... remains unclear because extensive comparisons are lacking. This makes it difficult for end-users to determine which reduction types are best suited for a certain analysis task. In this paper, we propose an assessment methodology for the evaluation and comparison of trace reduction techniques. We illustrate the methodology using a selection of four types of reduction methods found in literature, which we evaluate and compare using a test set of seven large execution traces. Our approach enables a systematic assessment of trace reduction techniques, which eases the selection of suitable reductions in different settings, and allows for a more effective use of dynamic analysis tools in software maintenance. 978-1-4244-2614-0/08/$25.00
