2013 arXiv   pre-print
We summarize recent developments in the VINCIA parton shower. After a brief review of the basics of the formalism, the extension of VINCIA to hadron collisions is sketched.  ...  Like every parton shower, VINCIA implements the unitary evolution of a parton configuration from a scale Q start on the order of the hard scale of the partonic interaction to a scale Q had on the order  ...  Alternative definitions of Q for incoming partons are left to future investigations.  ...

Conspiracy theory and cognitive style: a worldview

Neil Dagnall, Kenneth Drinkwater, Andrew Parker, Andrew Denovan, Megan Parton
2015 Frontiers in Psychology
This paper assessed whether belief in conspiracy theories was associated with a particularly cognitive style (worldview). The sample comprised 223 volunteers recruited via convenience sampling and included undergraduates, postgraduates, university employees, and alumni. Respondents completed measures assessing a range of cognitive-perceptual factors (schizotypy, delusional ideation, and hallucination proneness) and conspiratorial beliefs (general attitudes toward conspiracist thinking and

The best predictor of belief in conspiracies was delusional ideation. Consistent with the notion of a coherent conspiratorial mindset, scores across conspiracy measures correlated strongly. Whilst findings supported the view that belief in conspiracies, within the sub-clinical population, was associated with a delusional thinking style, cognitive-perceptual factors in combination accounted for only 32% of the variance.

2020 bioRxiv   pre-print
Knowledge of cellular and structural biology has reached unprecedented levels of detail. In conjunction with advances in 3D computer visualisation techniques this has allowed exploration of cellular ultrastructure and environments by a virtual user. The extraction and integration of relevant scientific information, along with consideration of the best representation of data, is often a bottleneck in the visualisation process for many 3D biomedical artists. Here we introduce "Nanoscape", a

We combine actual data from various scientific disciplines (including structural biology, cell biology and multiple microscopic techniques) and apply artistic expression and design aesthetics to create a unique new experience where a real-time virtual explorer can traverse a cell surface, observe and interact with a more scientifically accurate cell surface environment.
