On Double-Sided QR-Codes [article]

Due to the widespread adoption of the smart mobile devices, QR codes have become one of the most-known types of 2D codes around the world. However, the data capacity properties of modern QR codes are still not perfect. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel approach to make double-sided QR codes, which could carry two different messages in a straight and mirrored position. To facilitate the process of creation of such codes we propose two methods of their construction: the brute-force method and the analytic solution.

Conservative curved systems and free functional model [article]

We introduce conservative curved systems over multiply connected domains and study relationships of such systems with related notions of functional model, characteristic function, and transfer function. In contrast to standard theory for the unit disk, characteristic functions and transfer functions are essentially different objects. We study possibility to recover the characteristic function for a given transfer function. As the result we obtain the procedure to construct the functional model

Factorizations and invariant subspaces for weighted Schur classes [article]

We study factorizations of operator valued functions of weighted Schur classes over multiply-connected domains. There is a correspondence between functions from weighted Schur classes and so-called "conservative curved" systems introduced in the paper. DYPLODOC: Dynamic Plots for Document Classification [article]

Narrative generation and analysis are still on the fringe of modern natural language processing yet are crucial in a variety of applications. This paper proposes a feature extraction method for plot dynamics. We present a dataset that consists of the plot descriptions for thirteen thousand TV shows alongside meta-information on their genres and dynamic plots extracted from them. We validate the proposed tool for plot dynamics extraction and discuss possible applications of this method to the tasks of narrative analysis and generation.

StoryDB: Broad Multi-language Narrative Dataset [article]

This paper presents StoryDB - a broad multi-language dataset of narratives. StoryDB is a corpus of texts that includes stories in 42 different languages. Every language includes 500+ stories. Some of the languages include more than 20 000 stories. Every story is indexed across languages and labeled with tags such as a genre or a topic. The corpus shows rich topical and language variation and can serve as a resource for the study of the role of narrative in natural language processing across

Preservation of Digital Images: Question of Fixity

One of the most important aspects of the long-term digital-image preservation strategy is maintaining data fixity, i.e., assuring the integrity and authenticity of original data. This article aims to highlight the limitations of the approaches used to maintain the fixity of digital images in the digital preservation process and to offer perceptual hashing as a way to alleviate some of the limitations of current approaches, as well as discuss some non-technical implications of the described

This paper is exploratory, and while it includes a simple experiment description, it only outlines the problem and testing environment for a possible solution that could be elaborated on in further research. The most commonly used fixity maintaining techniques are immutability of data and file checksums/cryptographic hashes. On the other hand, planning for long-term preservation necessitates the need to migrate data into new future formats to maintain availability and sustainability, and the concept of the file itself should not be assumed to remain forever, which calls for other tools to ascertain the fixity of digital images. The problem goes beyond one that is exclusively technical: bitstream content is not ready for human perception, and the digital preservation strategy should include all the necessary technical steps to assure the availability of stored images to human eyes. This shifts the perspective on what should be considered the digital image in digital preservation. It is not the file, but a perceptible object, or, more specifically—instructions to create one. Therefore, it calls for additional tools to maintain fixity, such as perceptual hashing, transformation logging, and others.

Several performance measures can be used for evaluating classification results: accuracy, F-measure, and many others. Can we say that some of them are better than others, or, ideally, choose one measure that is best in all situations? To answer this question, we conduct a systematic analysis of classification performance measures: we formally define a list of desirable properties and theoretically analyze which measures satisfy which properties. We also prove an impossibility theorem: some
more » ... able properties cannot be simultaneously satisfied. Finally, we propose a new family of measures satisfying all desirable properties except one. This family includes the Matthews Correlation Coefficient and a so-called Symmetric Balanced Accuracy that was not previously used in classification literature. We believe that our systematic approach gives an important tool to practitioners for adequately evaluating classification results.

The review embraces a number of research papers concerning the fabrication of oxide thermoelectric systems, with TiO2−SrTiO3 biphase ceramics being emphasized. The ceramics is particularly known for a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) forming spontaneously on the TiO2/SrTiO3 heterointerface (modulation doping), unlike ordinary 2DEG occurrence on specially fabricated thin film. Such effect is provided by the SrTiO3 conduction band edge being 0.40 and 0.20 eV higher than that for anatase and

That is why, in the case of a checkered arrangement of TiO2 and SrTiO3 grains, the united 2D net is probably formed along the grain boundaries with 2DEG occurring there. To reach such conditions, there should be applied novelties in the field of ceramics materials science, because it is important to obtain highly dense material preserving small (nanoscale) grain size and thin interface boundary. The review also discusses some aspects of reactive spark plasma sintering as a promising method of preparing perovskite-oxide TiO2−SrTiO3 thermoelectric materials for high-temperature applications.
