We extend the L* algorithm to learn bimonoids recognising pomset languages. We then identify a class of pomset automata that accepts precisely the class of pomset languages recognised by bimonoids and show how to convert between bimonoids and automata.

HABs can have severe impacts in fisheries or human health by the consumption of contaminated bivalves. Monitoring assessment (quantitative and qualitative identification) of these organisms, is routinely accomplished by microscopic identification and counting of these organisms. Nonetheless, molecular biology techniques are gaining relevance, once these approaches can easily identify phytoplankton organisms at species level and even cell number quantifications. From our work, Direct PCR master mix for tissue samples, proved to be the most adequate by its velocity of processivity, practicability, reproducibility, sensitiveness and robustness. However, brands such as Omega Biotek, GRISP, Qiagen and MP Biomedicals also showed good results for conventional DNA extraction as well as all the Taq brands tested (GRISP, GE Healthcare Life Sciences, ThermoFisher Scientific and Promega). Lugols solution, with our tested kits did not show negative interference in DNA amplification. The same can be said about mechanical digestion, with no significant differences among kits with or without this homogenization step.

Rupture of the atrioventricular groove is an uncommon but dreaded complication of mitral valve replacement. We present the case of a 74-year-old male submitted to mitral valve surgery, complicated by atrioventricular groove rupture presaged by the excessive rocking movement of the prosthesis seen in the pre-discharge transthoracic echocardiogram. .

We introduce a variant of transition systems, where activation of transitions depends on conditions of the environment and upgrades during runtime potentially create additional transitions. Using a cornerstone result in lattice theory, we show that such transition systems can be modelled in two ways: as conditional transition systems (CTS) with a partial order on conditions, or as lattice transition systems (LaTS), where transitions are labelled with the elements from a distributive lattice. We

We explain how conditional transition systems are related to featured transition systems for the modelling of software product lines. Furthermore, we show how to compute bisimilarity symbolically via BDDs by defining an operation on BDDs that approximates an element of a Boolean algebra into a lattice. We have implemented our procedure and provide runtime results.

Symbolic Finite Automata and Register Automata are two orthogonal extensions of finite automata motivated by real-world problems where data may have unbounded domains. These automata address a demand for a model over large or infinite alphabets, respectively. Both automata models have interesting applications and have been successful in their own right. In this paper, we introduce Symbolic Register Automata, a new model that combines features from both symbolic and register automata, with a

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that affects the joints and results in reduced patient quality of life due to its chronic nature and several comorbidities. RA is also associated with a high socioeconomic burden. Currently, several available therapies minimize symptoms and prevent disease progression. However, more effective treatments are needed due to current therapies' severe side-effects, especially under long-term use. Drug delivery systems have demonstrated their

The first to achieve market authorization were liposomes that still represent a considerable part of approved delivery systems. In this manuscript, we review the role of liposomes in RA treatment, address preclinical studies and clinical trials, and discuss factors that could hamper a successful clinical translation. We also suggest some alterations that could potentially improve their progression to the market.

Objective We aim to identify retrospectively surgically treated patients with an ankylosed spine who sustained a vertebral fracture. Our goal is to evaluate the main outcomes and complications. Methods We selected patients through the database of surgical interventions in the setting of fractures of an ankylosed spine segment between January 1st 2008 and June 30th 2018. We collected data from digital medical records. The parameters analyzed include hospital length of stay, Intensive Care Unit

... CU) admission, perioperative and postoperative complications as well as neurological evolution. Results Fractures occurred in 14 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (82%) and 3 patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (18%). All patients were male and the mean age was 69 years. Fourteen fractures occurred after minor trauma (83%), of which 11 were due to falls from standing height or lower (65%). The cervical spine represents the majority of the levels involved (65%). Seven patients were admitted to the ICU (41%) and 11 suffered neurological damage. There was improvement of neurological status in less than 50% and there were high percentages of post-operative complications. Conclusion Patients with ankylosed spine diseases are at higher risk for vertebral fracture, even after minor trauma, and these are located predominantly in the cervical spine. The surgical treatment of these conditions is effective as it allows improvement of the patient's neurological status. However, they still present higher morbidity and mortality, as well as increased post-op complications. Prevention of falls may drastically change patients' outcome, neurological function and independence in activities of daily living. Level of evidence IV; A case series therapeutic study.

Guarded Kleene Algebra with Tests (GKAT) is the fragment of Kleene Algebra with Tests (KAT) that arises by replacing the union and iteration operations of KAT with predicate-guarded variants. GKAT is more efficiently decidable than KAT and expressive enough to model simple imperative programs, making it attractive for applications to e.g. network verification. In this paper, we further explore GKAT's automata theory, and present GL*, an algorithm for learning the GKAT automaton representation

... a black-box, by observing its behaviour. A complexity analysis shows that it is more efficient to learn a representation of a GKAT program with GL* than with Angluin's existing L* algorithm. We implement GL* and L* in OCaml and compare their performances on example programs.
