Macular dysfunction in drusen maculopathy assessed with multifocal electroretinogram and optical coherence tomography

Jose Garcia-Garcia, Monica Lovestam Adrian, Andréasson, Holm, Ruiz-Moreno
2013 Clinical Ophthalmology
To study the relationship between macular function assessed by multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) and morphological changes evaluated with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography in patients with drusen maculopathy. Ten patients (age 71 ± 5 years) with drusen maculopathy were compared to fifteen healthy control patients (age 67 ± 7 years). One eye per patient was examined with OCT, color fundus pictures, and mfERG (103 hexagons) recorded in nine areas corresponding to the
more » ... e areas of the OCT retinal map. Drusen density for every separated area was registered. All nine areas in the maculopathy group demonstrated prolonged implicit time compared to healthy controls; the mean value for the maculopathy group was 31.3 milliseconds (95% confidence intervals [CI]: 30.9-31.6) vs 27.9 milliseconds (95% CI: 27.5-28.2; P = 0.006) for the control group. The amplitude in the foveal area was lower in the maculopathy group; the mean value for the maculopathy group was 25.1 nV/deg(2) (95% CI: 18.4-31.7) vs 33.9 nV/deg(2) (95% CI: 27-40.9; P = 0.03) for the control group. mfERG in the maculopathy group demonstrated no differences in areas with or without drusen. There was no correlation between the retinal thickness assessed with OCT and the mfERG response. Eyes with drusen maculopathy demonstrated functional changes compared to healthy controls evaluated with mfERG. Drusen seems to be associated with general macular dysfunction.

Treatment of Pulmonary Disease of Cystic Fibrosis: A Comprehensive Review

2021 Antibiotics
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that causes absence or dysfunction of a protein named transmembrane conductance regulatory protein (CFTR) that works as an anion channel. As a result, the secretions of the organs where CFTR is expressed are very viscous, so their functionality is altered. The main cause of morbidity is due to the involvement of the respiratory system as a result of recurrent respiratory infections by different pathogens. In recent decades, survival has been increasing,
more » ... rising by around age 50. This is due to the monitoring of patients in multidisciplinary units, early diagnosis with neonatal screening, and advances in treatments. In this chapter, we will approach the different therapies used in CF for the treatment of symptoms, obstruction, inflammation, and infection. Moreover, we will discuss specific and personalized treatments to correct the defective gene and repair the altered protein CFTR. The obstacle for personalized CF treatment is to predict the drug response of patients due to genetic complexity and heterogeneity of uncommon mutations.

Computational Methods and Software Tools for Functional Analysis of miRNA Data

Adrian Garcia-Moreno, Pedro Carmona-Saez
2020 Biomolecules
miRNAs are important regulators of gene expression that play a key role in many biological processes. High-throughput techniques allow researchers to discover and characterize large sets of miRNAs, and enrichment analysis tools are becoming increasingly important in decoding which miRNAs are implicated in biological processes. Enrichment analysis of miRNA targets is the standard technique for functional analysis, but this approach carries limitations and bias; alternatives are currently being

In this review, we describe the two workflows of miRNAs enrichment analysis, based on target gene or miRNA annotations, highlighting statistical tests, software tools, up-to-date databases, and functional annotations resources in the study of metazoan miRNAs.

Automatic detection of genomic regions with informative epigenetic patterns

2018 BMC Genomics
Epigenetic phenomena are crucial for explaining the phenotypic plasticity seen in the cells of different tissues, developmental stages and diseases, all holding the same DNA sequence. As technology is allowing to retrieve epigenetic information in a genome-wide fashion, massive epigenomic datasets are being accumulated in public repositories. New approaches are required to mine those data to extract useful knowledge. We present here an automatic approach for detecting genomic regions with
more » ... etic variation patterns across samples related to a grouping of these samples, as a way of detecting regions functionally associated to the phenomenon behind the classification. We show that the regions automatically detected by the method in the whole human genome associated to three different classifications of a set of epigenomes (cancer vs. healthy, brain vs. other organs, and fetal vs. adult tissues) are enriched in genes associated to these processes. The method is fully automatic and can exhaustively scan the whole human genome at any resolution using large collections of epigenomes as input, although it also produces good results with small datasets. Consequently, it will be valuable for obtaining functional information from the incoming epigenomic information as it continues to accumulate.

2013 2013 IEEE Sixth International Conference on Cloud Computing
The Personal Cloud model is a mainstream service that meets the growing demand of millions of users for reliable off-site storage. However, despite their broad adoption, very little is known about the quality of service (QoS) of Personal Clouds. In this paper, we present a measurement study of three major Personal Clouds: DropBox, Box and SugarSync. Actively accessing to free accounts through their REST APIs, we analyzed important aspects to characterize their QoS, such as transfer speed,
more » ... ility and failure rate. Our measurement, conducted during two months, is the first to deeply analyze many facets of these popular services and reveals new insights, such as important performance differences among providers, the existence of transfer speed daily patterns or sudden service breakdowns. We believe that the present analysis of Personal Clouds is of interest to researchers and developers with diverse concerns about Cloud storage, since our observations can help them to understand and characterize the nature of these services.

2015 Revista Colombiana Salud Libre

Managing Uncertain Complex Events in Web of Things Applications [chapter]

2018 Lecture Notes in Computer Science
A critical issue in the Web of Things (WoT) is the need to process and analyze the interactions of Web-interconnected real-world objects. Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a powerful technology for analyzing streams of information about real-time distributed events, coming from different sources, and for extracting conclusions from them. However, in many situations these events are not free from uncertainty, due to either unreliable data sources and networks, measurement uncertainty, or to the
more » ... nability to determine whether an event has actually happened or not. This short research paper discusses how CEP systems can incorporate different kinds of uncertainty, both in the events and in the rules. A case study is used to validate the proposal, and we discuss the benefits and limitations of this CEP extension.

2021 Electronics
The design of recommendation algorithms aware of the user's context has been the subject of great interest in the scientific community, especially in the music domain where contextual factors have a significant impact on the recommendations. In this type of system, the user's contextual information can come from different sources such as the specific time of day, the user's physical activity, and geolocation, among many others. This context information is generally obtained by electronic

The objective of this paper is to present a systematic literature review to analyze recent work to date in the field of context-aware recommender systems and specifically in the domain of music recommendation. This paper aims to analyze and classify the type of contextual information, the electronic devices used to collect it, the main outstanding challenges and the possible opportunities for future research directions.
