Most of telecommunication traffic (voice and data)around the globe is carried over the optical fiber cable. Theinternational traffic through various countries is carried overoptical fiber cables laid under the sea. Similarly the long-haultraffic within the country is through optical fiber laidunderground. In this paper, different optical losses areanalyzed by setting up several experiments at a single modeoptical fiber spool of 4 km. The optical fiber segment wassubjected to various stress, temperatures and acute bendingconditions. The resulting losses and degradation of the signal wasmeasured using OTDR and Power meter.

Wideband continuously tunable integrated delay line based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder

A novel architecture based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer and equipped with tunable couplers is proposed for the realization of the tunable integrated optical delay line. We demonstrate that the delay line based on two cascaded Mach-Zehnder interferometer has the consistently larger bandwidth and bandwidth-delay product compared to a single stage. The presented device can be ideally operated with a single control signal and is experimentally demonstrated with true-time delay continuously tunable from zero to 124 ps.

The Building Block (BB) approach has recently emerged in photonic as a suitable strategy for the analysis and design of complex circuits. Each BB can be foundry related and contains a mathematical macro-model of its functionality. As well known, statistical variations in fabrication processes can have a strong effect on their functionality and ultimately affect the yield. more » ... per presents a method to build a novel class of Stochastic Process Design Kits for the analysis of photonic circuits. The proposed design kits directly store the information on the stochastic behavior of each building block in the form of a generalized-polynomial-chaos-based augmented macro-model obtained by properly exploiting stochastic collocation and Galerkin methods. Using this approach, we demonstrate that the augmented macro-models of the BBs can be calculated once and stored in a BB (foundry dependent) library and then used for the analysis of any desired circuit. The main advantage of this approach, shown here for the first time in photonics, is that the stochastic moments of an arbitrary photonic circuit can be evaluated by a single simulation only, without the need for repeated simulations. The accuracy and the significant speed-up with respect to the classical Monte Carlo analysis are verified by means of classical photonic circuit example with multiple uncertain variables.

Machine-assisted design of integrated photonic devices (e.g. through optimization and inverse design methods) is opening the possibility of exploring very large design spaces, novel functionalities and non-intuitive geometries. These methods are generally used to optimize performance figures-of-merit. On the other hand, the effect of manufacturing variability remains a fundamental challenge since small fabrication errors can have a significant impact on light propagation, especially in
more » ... x-contrast platforms. Brute-force analysis of these variabilities during the main optimization process can become prohibitive, since a large number of simulations would be required. To this purpose, efficient stochastic techniques integrated in the design cycle allow to quickly assess the performance robustness and the expected fabrication yield of each tentative device generated by the optimization. In this invited talk we present an overview of the recent advances in the implementation of stochastic techniques in photonics, focusing in particular on stochastic spectral methods that have been regarded as a promising alternative to the classical Monte Carlo method. Polynomial chaos expansion techniques generate so called surrogate models by means of an orthogonal set of polynomials to efficiently represent the dependence of a function to statistical variabilities. They achieve a considerable reduction of the simulation time compared to Monte Carlo, at least for mid-scale problems, making feasible the incorporation of tolerance analysis and yield optimization within the photonic design flow.

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an individual's satisfaction or happiness with the dimensions of life mentioned above, in the context of being affected by or affecting the individual's health. There have been multiple standardized questionnaires developed to evaluate the HRQOL of people, and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) is one of them. Objective: To assess the health-related quality of life of the general adult population of Peshawar city by use of the SF-36 survey
more » ... . Materials & methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Peshawar city from March to May 2019. The sample comprised of 263 respondents aged 18 and above. Data were collected by systematic random sampling of households using the SF-36 survey form and analyzed using SPSS version 22. Results: A total of 263 questionnaires were fully filled and valid. Of the 263, 66.9% were male (n=176) and 33.1 % were female (n=87). The age of the participants ranged from 18-70 years, with a mean age of 30.5 ± 11.3 years. The domain value for SF at 67.78, followed closely by BP at 67.54, then MH at 62.69, PF at 61.27, GH at 60.50, VT at 62.69, RP at 57.03, and the lowest value was of RE at 56.52. Conclusion: The study revealed that the HRQOL of the population of Peshawar city was less as compared to other international studies. It showed males had a better HRQOL in all domains except one. We propose an efficient technique based on polynomial chaos expansion and genetic algorithms to enable constrained optimization of photonic integrated circuits subject to fabrication tolerances. Simulations on a realistic SOI design confirm its effectiveness.
