2010 International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery
We conducted a study of participants' abilities to place a laparoscopic port for in vivo biosensor use. Biosensors have physical limitations that make port placement crucial to proper data collection. A new port placement algorithm enabled evaluation of port locations, using segmented patient data in a virtual environment. Methods Port placement scoring algorithms were integrated into an imageguided surgery system. Virtual test scenes were created to evaluate various scenarios encountered

Participants' scores were also compared to those of a port placement algorithm. Results The port placement algorithm consistently outscored participants by 10-25%. Participants were inconsistent from trial to trial and from participant to participant.

A study of alanine aminotransferase - aspartate aminotransferase as a marker of advanced alcoholic liver disease

Aravind G. N., Abhilash K., Syed Umar Farooq
2020 International Journal of Advances in Medicine
Alcohol is one of the most common etiology for chronic liver disease. There are several enzymes which remain elevated in both excessive Alcohol consumption and Alcohol induced liver cirrhosis1. But none is sensitive or specific. The ratio of Aspartate transaminase (AST) with Alanine transaminase (ALT) is one of the best marker for alcohol liver disease. Current study mainly compares the ratio of AST/ALT with both Alcoholic liver disease and excessive Alcohol consumption patients. Methods:
more » ... tional, cross sectional study conducted on 50 patients diagnosed with alcoholic liver disease and 50 patients of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Either admitted or seen on outpatient basis at Bangalore medical college and research institute and data was compared among the groups and appropriate statistical methods are applied. Results: The mean ratio of AST/ALT ratio in 50 patients of alcoholic liver disease group was 3.45, whereas the mean ratio in 50 patient of alcohol withdrawal was about 99. When compared statistically this ratio was significant in chronic liver disease group. Conclusions: Most of the patients with heavy alcohol drinking had high AST and alt levels. But ratio of AST/ALT levels was significant high and suggest chronic liver disease secondary to alcohol.

A prospective comparative study of post-operative complications of hand sewn versus stapled anastomosis in elective GI surgeries

Abhilash N, Venugopal KJ, Srikanth K Aithal
2021 International Journal of Surgery Science
Anastomotic leak and wound infection are the two feared complications of any bowel anastomosis. In this study a comparison between hand suturing and surgical stapling in patients undergoing elective gastrointestinal surgeries with regard to post-operative complications namely anastomotic leak and wound infection. Methods: A prospective study was conducted in 40 patients undergoing elective resection and anastomosis over a period of 1 year. Post-operatively patients were followed up for

Results: In total forty patients were studied out of which twenty patients underwent hand sewn and twenty patients underwent stapler anastomosis. There was anastomotic leak in 1 case of gastrojejunostomy in hand sewn group. No leak was observed in stapled anastomosis group. Wound infection was observed in 5 cases. 4 cases were in hand sewn group and 1 in stapled group. There was no mortality in either group post-operatively. A sub-group analysis was also done. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the incidence of post-operative complications namely anastomotic leak and wound infection with respect to hand sewn and staples techniques. Therefore both hand sewn and stapled anastomosis technique can be safely practiced.
