Abstract

Francisco Xavier-Século dezassete ABSTRACT: Theatre was an important field of study at the Jesuit colleges, from their arrival in Portugal (1542) until their expulsion (1759). The students were in charge of the acting and the teachers were occupied writing originals for different celebrations, depicting the lives of holy people. Therefore, the evangelic activity of S. Francisco Xavier was the topic for, at least, two spectacles, during the 17th century. The pamphlets related to these events do not contain the speech of the characters but through a more or less detailed description in one case and the synopsis of the scenes in the other, it is possible to obtain a memory of a theatre that crossed all the main streets of Lisbon and whose sumptuousness attracted a great amount of people.
