Leonard Wolfson (Lord Wolfson of Marylebone) was a businessman and philanthropist. His family's wealth was made in the retail trade, and, with his father, he helped to turn Great Universal Stores into one the largest retail conglomerates in Europe. In 1955, alongside his father and mother, he created the Foundation that bears his family name. The Wolfson Foundation's activities and grant-making have been focused on research and education—and, not least, the advancement of science and medicine.
