Abstract

BACK GROUND: Te ars of th e rotator cuff are a com m on occurre nce affe cting m il l ions of pe opl e gl obal l y. M agne tic re s onance (M R) im aging is th e m os t accurate im aging m odal ity for e val uating pote ntial caus e s of s h oul de r ins tabil ity. Th e rotator cuff can al s o be vis ual iz e d w ith ul tras onograph y (US). Initial US re s ul ts in th e de te ction of rotator cuff te ars varie d, probabl y due to th e us e of l ow fre q ue ncy trans duce rs and l im ite d e xpe rie nce w ith th e e xam ination proce dure. O BJECTIVE: To de te rm ine th e diagnos tic accuracy of ul tras onograph y in e val uation of s upras pinatus te ar tak ing m agne tic re s onance im aging as gol d s tandard. M A TERIAL AND M ETH O DS: Th is w as a cros s s e ctional s tudy, conducte d at de partm e nt of radiol ogy, BVH Bah aw al pur from 29-9-2015 to 28-09-2016. Th e cal cul ate d s am pl e s iz e w as 135. Data w as anal yz e d us ing SPSS ve rs ion 19. Se ns itivity, s pe cificity, ne gative pre dictive val ue (NPV), pos itive pre dictive val ue (PPV) and accuracy w e re cal cul ate d for USG us ing M RI as gol d s tandard. RESULTS: A total of 135 patie nts w as e nrol l e d. M e an age of th e patie nts w as 39 .86 ± 4.21 ye ars. Th e re w e re 46.67% (n=63) m al e patie nts .Fre q ue ncy of s upras pinatus te ar w as re ve al e d in 21.48% (n=29) patie nts on M RI. Diagnos tic accuracy of ul tras onograph y re ve al e d s e ns itivity, s pe cificity, pos itive pre dictive val ue , ne gative pre dictive val ue and accuracy rate as 86.21% , 9 5.28% , 83.33% , 9 6.19 % and 9 3.33% re s pe ctive l y. CO NCLUSIO N: Th e auth ors of th e s tudy concl ude th at th e diagnos tic accuracy of ul tras onograph y for th e e val uation of s upras pinatus te ar is h igh and com parabl e to gol d s tandard m agne tic re s onance im aging.
