ABOUT THE AUTHORS Masayuki Inaba was born on 23 May 1958. He received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1981, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in information engineering from the same university in 1983 and 1986, respectively. He is currently a lecturer of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tokyo. His research interests cover vision systems in general and hand-eye coordin- ation of robotics in particular. He is a member of the Robotics Society of Japan, the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, and the Information Processing Society of Japan.

Hirochika Inoue was born on 5 July 1942. He received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1965. After receiving a degree of Doctor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1970, he joined the Automatic Control Section at the Electrotechnical Laboratory. In 1978 he was appointed Associate Professor of the University of Tokyo. Since 1984 he has been a Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research interests include fine mechanism and control, the robot vision system, AI programming and integration of these functions towards an intelligent robot system. He is a member of the Robotics Society of Japan, the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, the Information Processing Society of Japan, IEEE, and ACM.
