Abstract

The following piece of work looks at the field of media pedagogy, and specifically at the concepts of "media skills" and "active media work". The research looks at how active participation in media at a school radio station (Radioigel in Graz, Austria) affects young peoples' media skills (Bielefeld media skills model). The challenge of this research was fitting the theoretical construct of media skills to the example case of a school radio station. Using the qualitative method from the guideline interviews enabled a deeper look into the living environment and use of media of the subjects of this study. The interviews were evaluated using the qualitative content analysis methods of Mayring. A total of nine radio producers were interviewed – of which five were girls and four were boys. The results generally show that the subjects' media skills are developed above all in the areas of media use and composition. They have an equally good solid knowledge of instrumental media, and any problems which arise are mainly to do with data handling. The aspect of analytical and reflexive criticism to media problems proves to be well developed, e.g. an attack of the private sphere in social media, which can take place in these young peoples' immediate environment. However the education of media studies and thus general understanding of media appears to be poorly developed. This study found that several factors can help develop a more advanced set of media skills – these include age (being older), varied use of media, friends or siblings with good media knowledge, and media use due to personal interest.
