				<jats:p>THF solutions of hydridomagnesium chloride (HMgCl, 1a) can be prepared in nearly quantitative yields by hydrogenation of magnesium in THF solutions of magnesium chloride at 0 °C in the presence of a CrCl<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>-Mg anthracene catalyst. Concentration of saturated HMgCl solutions, or hydrogenation of magnesium under the above mentioned conditions in MgCl<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>-THF suspensions, lead to the formation of THF solutions of species having the approximate com position HMgCl · MgH<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> or 2 HMgCl · MgH<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>.</jats:p>},
